Bears backup running back Kevin Jones was carted off the field in the first quarter with what is being said to be an ankle injury. Hopefully its not to serious, he was supposed to create a one-two punch with Matt Forte, who carried the ball way too many times last season. Look for the Bears too try and claim someone off waivers, who can come in for Matt Forte at times. I just don’t think “The Other” Adrian Peterson or Garrett Wolfe can be a good solid backup to Matt Forte.
CB Zack Bowman finally came back from his hamstring injury and intercepted a pass on Cleveland’s first drive, but then left the game with that same hamstring injury. It looks the Bears could be without both Charles Tillman and Zack Bowman against Green Bay in week one. Nathan Vasher and Corey Graham should be the starters in week one if that is the case.
Wide receivers Johnny Knox, Juaquin Iglesias and Brandon Rideau all had big games. Knox had two catches for 62 yards and a kick return of 50 yards and a punt return of 38 yards. Iglesias had five catches for 72 yards and looked solid. Brandon Rideau had an 18 yard touchdown reception. Rashied Davis and Devin Aromashodu didn’t make any plays tonight.
Tight end Michael Gaines looked good finishing the game with two catches for 34 yards and a touchdown. Former Northwestern product Brett Basanez looked sharp completing 10 of 13 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown.
Newly acquired Rod Hood led the defense with seven tackles, but didn’t look that good in the secondary tonight. DE Ervin Baldwin recorded two sacks tonight. Marcus Harrison and Matt Toeania each recorded sacks as well.
Robbie Gould scored 14 of the Bears points tonight by making all four of his field goals and two extra points.
It really doesn’t matter that the Bears won 26-23 tonight, but it does matter that some of the Bears players fighting for a roster spot stepped up there game.
WARNING:
The Bears should be worried about the health of their secondary heading into the first of the game the season in Green Bay.
Next up on the Bears schedule is Saturday at 3 PM, when the Bears have to cut their roster to 53 players.
