Former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy spoke up about Bears QB Jay Cutler. Dungy is now an analyst on NBC’s “Football Night In America” alongside Rodney Harrison and Dan Patrick.
Here’s what Dungy had to say about Jay Cutler to the Chicago Tribune:
“I just was surprised that everyone was conceding the Super Bowl to the Bears when they got Jay Cutler, hey, there’s a lot more to quarterbacking than just throwing.”
“Brett Favre had to learn all those things. He didn’t go to the Super Bowl his first or second year in Green Bay. He had some growing pains. And that’s what I previously expressed … that you were going to see some of that with Jay Cutler in terms of his decision-making and those types of things.”
“He certainly has all the skills and it’s just going to be matter of putting it all together.”
“When we (the Colts) played Cutler (Denver), I didn’t see a polished, finished, Joe Montana-type quarterback that everybody was saying all of a sudden, the Bears have their franchise quarterback and they’re going to the Super Bowl. I like Jay Cutler. I like the ability he has. I think he can develop. But I think he’s a work in progress.”.
“There are a lot of similarities, you look at their arm strength. You look at their ability to throw. Jay Cutler probably moves around like Brett Favre did when he was a little younger. They gamble. They take chances.”
“Those are the things I haven’t seen from Cutler yet: the maturity, the decision-making, and doing it under pressure,” Dungy said. “I’m not talking about doing it when you’re 8-8, but when you win a game and you’re going to the playoffs. I hadn’t seen him in that situation. I want to see how he performs under those circumstances.”
