Adrian Peterson Doesn’t Think He’ll Be Back Next Season

Chicago+Bears+v+Houston+Texans+qZrdKprfDnQlThe Chicago Bears running back Adrian Peterson has spent all eight of seasons in the NFL with the Bears ever since he was drafted by them in 2002 in the sixth round.

Peterson hasn’t played much this season, even with all the injuries at the position. He is a free agent this off-season and I don’t know if the Bears really want to keep him with the depth they have. Matt Forte, Kevin Jones, Kahlil Bell and Garrett Wolfe are all better than Peterson in my mind, but I still like the guy and I think he deserves a look somewhere. If we decide to resign him I wouldn’t be mad, but it’s not a priority to bring him back especially with the other needs on the team.

Love Smith had this to say about Peterson and his future:

“Adrian has been a contributor on our team every year that I’ve been here, he’s had different roles, being the No. 2 running back and the No. 3. He’s the No. 3 running back now playing all special teams.

“I don’t know why he would feel that way. I would see why a guy would feel he’s not in the plan if he’s not getting time. But he’s playing the same amount. We like the (Forte-Bell) combination we have now, but we like Adrian too.”

The Bears have a lot of cap room this off-season, but I don’t if Peterson is a top priority for them because of free agents to be Adewale Ogunleye, Mark Anderson, Danieal Manning, Pisa Tinosamoia, plus the need at WR, OL, and S.

Peterson was a solid player for us and I’m glad we had him, but the numbers game says he is gone next season.

Top 5 Free Agents Bears Should Target This Off-Season

1. WR Brandon Marshall- At age 25, he has the talent to be a clear cut number one receiver and the Bears clearly need that. I think if he reunited with Cutler they would be in sync once again, but if they want to use Marshall correctly they would have to fire Ron Turner. marshall

2. WR Vincent Jackson- at 6’5″, he has quickly become one of the most dangerous weapons for the San Diego Chargers. He has already matched his touchdown total from last season (7). He is only 26 and would be a great addition to the Bears receiving which is way to small and way to young. Knox, Bennett and Hester are all decent at best. Jackson would be flat out nasty with Cutler throwing him passes.

3. Safety O.J. Atogwe- This guy has been really good over the past four seasons, combining for 18 interceptions and 14 forced fumbles. He is the game changer the Bears need in their secondary. Maybe we can scoop him up from stinky Rams.

4. OL Longan Mankins- This guy is a beast and would be a perfect fit at left guard. He is only 27 and he clearly knows how to play. http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2008/1205/rise_g_lmankins1_300i.jpg

5. OL Marcus McNeill- A former second round pick out of Auburn, McNeill is originally from Chicago and he is one of the better tackles in the NFL. Considering the Orlando Pace project didn’t work, they need help.http://www.exposay.com/celebrity-photos/marcus-mcneill-73-2009-nfl-san-diego-chargers-1Enbsn.jpg

Report: Veteran Linebacker Cato June Signs With Bears

72993513RB035_AFC_CHAMPIONSAccording to Adam Schefter of ESPN, veteran linebacker Cato June has been signed by the Chicago Bears.

The former Colt (2003-2006), Buc (2007-2008), and Texan (2009) has appeared in 88 games, making 504 tackles, one sack, 12 interceptions and three forced fumbles over six seasons.

The 30 year old was drafted in the sixth round by the Colts in 2003 out of Michigan. He was voted to his onlyPro Bowl in 2005. He won a Super Bowl ring in 2006 with the Colts, in a game that came against the Bears. He left that offseason for Tampa Bay for some big money, but was released this offseason because the Bucs were going to a younger team. He signed with the Houston Texans this offseason, but broke his forearm in a practice and was put on injured reserve. He was released with an injury settlement at the start of the season.

The Bears need some linebackers after Lance Briggs was roughed up in Minnesota. They have already lost starters Brian Urlacher and Pisa Tinoisamoa. They still have Hunter Hillenmeyer, Nick Roach and Jamar Williams as experienced linebackers. June will definitely see some playing time on Sunday, with Briggs iffy for the game.

What does this move mean for the long term?

Well, Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, Hunter Hillenmeyer and Pisa Tinoisamoa will all be over 30 next season. Tinoisamoa is a free agent, so maybe there seing if June is a starter for next season. Personally I like the signing, June is a very versatile player, but he is kind of small. At, 6’0″ June is one of the smallest linebackers in the league. June will be flying around on Sunday.

Bill Cowher To Coach The Bears Next Year?

bill-cowherAccording to 670 The Score in Chicago, the Bears recently reached out to CBS analyst Bill Cowher to assess his interest in the team’s head-coaching job should current head coach Lovie Smith be fired.

-The Score’s Hub Arkush claims his source for the report is “impeccable,” despite all of the Bears’ denials. Bill Cowher has previously stated that he would not speak to any teams until the season is over, but perhaps made an exception here. According to Profootballtalk.com, there are “rumors” that Cowher is interested in working for either the Bears or Texans.

I hope this rumor is true, because the Bears need some change and they need it fast. The problem is the Bears owe Lovie Smith $10 million dollars over the next two seasons. They clearly need a new offensive coordinator. Head coach may be to expensive for the Bears management.

RB Kahlil Bell Promoted To The Active Roster

bellKahlil Bell, who the Bears signed to the practice squad in September has been promoted to the 53-man roster due to lack of depth at the running back position.

The Bears today announced that Garrett Wolfe will be out for the season with a lacerated kidney and during the preseason they lost Kevin Jones to an ankle injury.

The 5-11, 212-pound Bell ran for 1,741 yards and 17 touchdowns and averaged 4.4 yards per carry over his four-year career with the UCLA Bruins (as pictured).

Bell has being seeing some reps with the first team offense this week, just to see what he can do. He will most likely contribute only on special teams for now and be the third string running back behind Matt Forte and Adrian Peterson.

This is what Bell had to say about his first opportunity to play:

“I’m just happy to be here, it’s been a dream since I’ve been a little kid to be at this level. If I get the opportunity to contribute, I’ll be living the dream.”

Final Thoughts:

I like this move by the Bears, I think bringing in a young runner, who is familiar with your system is a good idea. I hope Kahlil gets a shot to get a carry or two during the last eight games of the season.

Bears Lose RB Garrett Wolfe For The Season

82514780Garrett Wolfe, a third round pick in 2007 out of Northern Illinois has landed on the injured reserve for the second straight season.

Wolfe suffered a lacerated kidney in the November 8th blowout against the Cardinals. Wolfe had 22 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown so far this season, averaging 15 yards per carry. He also had nine special team tackles in the eight games he appeared. Wolfe had 21 tackles on special teams last season and was a real leader on the unit.

With the loss of Wolfe, Adrian Peterson will see a lot more work on special teams and maybe a carry here and there.

Look for the Bears too try to snag a runner off of another teams practice squad, who has some special teams experience. If not they’ll likely promote Kahlil Bell from their own practice squad or add free agent RB Maurice Hicks to help contribute immediately.

We’ll see what the Bears will do in the coming days, but this is a bad loss for the Bears special teams which ranks fourth this season. Wolfe was also looking like a solid contributor on offense, but we’ll have to wait until next season to see him on the field again. Wolfe joins Kevin Jones as the second running back to land on the injured reserve.
