Key Matchup: Chicago Bears’ Offensive Line Against Clay Matthews

The first time the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers squared off this season, the Bears’ offensive line struggled mightily.

They allowed Jay Cutler to be sacked seven times including 3.5 times by Packers  linebacker Clay Matthews.

Cutler didn’t help his case in the 23-10 loss in Week Two. He forced passes into double coverage too often as his receivers couldn’t get separation from the Packers cornerbacks.

He also stayed in the pocket too often, but the offensive line really failed to give him ample time in the pocket.

He completed just 11 of 27 passes for 126 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions.

The Bears are 1-7 against the rival Packers since Jay Cutler arrived in Chicago in 2009. He has tossed seven touchdowns and 16 interceptions in total in those seven starts against the Packers.

He has been sacked three times in five of the seven starts. He hasn’t thrown more touchdowns than interceptions in any of those seven starts.

Bad news for the Bears on Sunday is that Clay Matthews is set to return for this game.

Matthews has missed the past five weeks due to a hamstring injury. He practiced on a limited basis on the past two days and in full on Friday.

A positive note for the Bears is the fact that Matthews had just 2.5 sacks in seven games against the Bears prior to this season’s meeting. In that time he also had four quarterback hits and one interception.

Matthews consistently beat Bears left tackle J’Marcus Webb in that Week Two matchup. Matthews moves around plenty on defense. He could be seen lining up against the right side of the Bears line with right tackle Jonathan Scott anchoring it on Sunday.

Matthews has nine sacks on the season, but the past four games he played in (Week Six-Week Nine) he had just one sack.

The Packers have the second most sacks in the league with 42 on the season. They allow around 22 points per game to opposing teams.

The Bears have allowed 37 sacks on the season, which is seventh most in the league.

So, what do the Bears have to do to stop Clay Matthews and the rest of the Packers pass rush?

They have to help J’Marcus Webb on the left side by bringing over a tight end or having Matt Forte or Michael Bush line up on the left of Cutler so they can block.

The Bears have allowed three sacks in total over Cutler’s last four starts. With Chris Spencer returning from a knee injury it will certainly help the left side of the line.

Cutler comes into this game banged up. He suffered a neck strain in the 21-14 loss against the Vikings last Sunday. He is also dealing with a mild knee sprain.

He has been limited all week in practice, but he will absolutely be under center for the Bears on Sunday.

If the Bears want to win they have to start out fast on offense and get points on the board because the Packers are going to bring pressure all afternoon long.

Containing Matthews isn’t out of the question considering this is his first game back.

It won’t be easy, but the Bears have to stop the Packers defensive line enough to give Cutler and the rest of the Bears’ offense a chance to succeed.

It’s a big game. With a lot on the line and a lot of meaning behind the game expect both teams to be ready to go in this one.

Even though the Bears can lose this game and still make the playoffs with two winnable games ahead the Bears need to win this game to really gain momentum heading into the postseason.

Bears Place Gould On Season Ending Injured Reserve; Sign Mare To Replace Him

The Chicago Bears announced on Tuesday that they placed kicker Robbie Gould on the injured reserve with a season-ending calf injury. Gould suffered the calf inury during pregame warmups against the Vikings on Sunday.

Olindo Mare was signed on to replace Gould after beating out Billy Cundiff and Neil Rackers in a tryout at Halas Hall.

Mare is a 39-year old veteran, who has played for the Seattle Seahawks and the New Orleans Saints as of late. He spent 10 seasons with the Miami Dolphins to start off his career.

Mare made 22 of 28 last season with the Seahawks. He has made 81.2 percent of his field goal attempts in his NFL career.

Without Gould it could be tough come crunch time at the end of games, but Mare has proven to be a solid kicker during his career.

Safety Craig Steltz (chest) and cornerback Sherrick McManis were both placed on season-ending injured reserve as well.

Wide receiver Joe Anderson was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster to help on special teams. Linebacker Jerry Franklin was signed from the Dallas Cowboys practice squad to help on special teams as well.

One roster spot is still available as the Bears waived recently signed guard Andre Gurode.

It’s never ending with injuries for the Bears in 2012, as key players have been hurt a plenty as of late.

They just have to play through the absences of those key players if they want to punch a ticket to the playoffs.

It won’t be easy, but the Bears have plenty of talent left to put things together with three games remaining.

Breaking News: Jay Cutler Will Start Against The Packers On Sunday

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler (6) gets a handshake from the Viking’s mascot at the conclusion of his team’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings at Mall of America Field, in Minneapolis, MN, on Sunday, December 9, 2012. (Nuccio DiNuzzo/Chicago Tribune)

After suffering a neck injury on a big hit by Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffin in the second quarter of Sunday’s game you could tell Chicago Bears’ quaterback Jay Cutler wasn’t comfortable.

He battled through a neck injury in the game, but was eventually taken out of action on the Bears final drive down 21-7.

Jason Campbell relieved him at quarterback and tossed a touchdown pass to Brandon Marshall to make the game 21-14.

The Bears failed to recover the onside kick and the rest was history.

After the game, Cutler had this to say regarding the injury.

“It was neck related,” he said via ESPNChicago.com. “I was getting spasms. I wasn’t going to help anybody being out there.”

However on “The Jay Cutler Show” on Monday on ESPN 1000 he was confident he would suit up on Sunday against the first place Green Bay Packers.

“I don’t see why not. I don’t have anything else to do,” Cutler said on “The Jay Cutler Show” on ESPN1000.

He also touched on his relationship with Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

“Me and Aaron are certainly not best friends.” When asked who is his best friend was, he said “Kristin is my BFF.”

On whether he will in fact be under center on Sunday.

“Unless something drastic happens. Absolutely.”

Cutler gives the Bears a chance to win games week in and week out.

This is a huge game for the Bears and Cutler won’t miss it if he can control it.

The Green Bay Packers against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field to decide the division. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Injury Update: Jennings, Urlacher, Bennett All Out, While Hester and Jeffery Set To Return

As expected all three injured Chicago Bears starters have been ruled out of action for this Sunday’s matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.

CB Tim Jennings (shoulder), MLB Brian Urlacher (hamstring), WR Earl Bennett (concussion) won’t be able to play against the Vikings after suffering injuries in the 23-17 loss last Sunday against the Seahawks.

Jennings and Bennett are expected to be out multiple weeks, while Urlacher could miss the final four games of the season, according to sources.

Jennings will be replaced in the starting lineup by veteran corner Kelvin Hayden and Urlacher will be replaced by stronside linebacker Nick Roach.

WR Devin Hester (concussion), WR Alshon Jeffery (knee) and T Gabe Carimi (hamstring) all practiced on a limited basis on Wednesday and Thursday, but practiced in full on Friday. All three players are listed as probable and are expected to suit up on Sunday.

Hester passed all the concussion tests and will move back onto special teams as the kick returner and move in as the third receiver on offense.

Getting Jeffery back will be a huge boost to the offense considering the recent injury to Earl Bennett, who was just starting to gel as of late.

RB Michael Bush (ribs), DT Stephen Paea (foot), LG Chris Spencer (knee) are all considered questionable after practicing on a limited basis this week.

Bush and Paea are expected to play on Sunday, while Spencer will likely sit out one more week to get his injured knee back to 100%.

With all the injuries the Bears have been dealing with as of late it has become overwhelming. They must prove they can win even without some of their best players.

Hayden and Roach, who are starting in place of Jennings and Urlacher aren’t the same playmakers, but they’ve shown they are capable of stepping in when called upon.

This is a must win game for the Bears, who play against NFC North opponents in three of their four final games of the season.

Injury Update: Urlacher Could Miss Final Four Games, While Jeffery Could Be Back This Week

The Chicago Bears have been hit with the injury bug as of late.

After seeing six starters go down with injuries in Week 13 against Minnesota, three starters suffered injuries on Sunday.

LB Brian Urlacher left the game in overtime on what turned out to be the last play in the Bears’ 23-17 loss to the Seahawks.

Urlacher exited the game with a hamstring injury. It was reported that he heard his hamstring “pop” on the second to last play of the afternoon.

According to sources, he could miss the next three games and maybe even the rest of the season. He underwent an MRI on Tuesday, which revealed he had a Grade 2 hamstring strain.

Sportsinjuryclinic.net defines a Grade 2 hamstring strain as “a partial tear in the muscle.”

He is hoping to return for the playoff push if the Bears are eligible for the playoffs by the time of his return.

For the meantime strong side linebacker Nick Roach will move over to the middle, while Geno Hayes will take Roach’s spot at the strong side position.

LB Dom DeCicco was signed on Tuesday to take over for Hayes on special teams.

Another key injury to the Bears’ defense took place late in Sunday’s loss. CB Tim Jennings was in noticeable pain after getting trucked by Seahawks FB Michael Robinson, who knew right when he hit Jennings it was bad news.

According to ESPN Chicago, Jennings had his right arm in a sling on Tuesday. He needed help getting dressed after the game on Sunday.

His status for Sunday is in doubt with his shoulder not in the best shape right now. Kelvin Hayden will slide into the lineup if Jennings can’t go, while D.J. Moore will move back to the nickelback position.

WR Earl Bennett suffered a concussion on Sunday and will likely be out when the Bears travel to Minnesota this week. WR Devin Hester missed last week’s game with a similar concussion, but says he’s “getting better as the days go,” via ChicagoSunTimes.com.

With the possibility of Bennett and Hester both out the Bears need someone to step up on offense.

Possibly the only good bit of injury news for the Bears is about rookie WR Alshon Jeffery, who appears to be on track to return this Sunday, according to sources.

He reportedly did some light running to test out his knee this past Saturday and ran routes at half-speed during pre-game warmups on Sunday. He’s missed the past two games with a minor knee injury.

Getting Jeffery back would be a huge boost to this offense. With the defense likely missing two starters in Urlacher and Jennings, the Bears could use all the offense they can get right now.

Injury Update: Forte Intends To Play, While Hester Has Been Ruled Out

The Chicago Bears received some good news and some bad news on Thursday.

Here’s the good news first.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Bears running back Matt Forte intends to play on Sunday. He was limited in practice for the second straight day with an ankle injury.

He has been trying very hard to get back onto the field as soon as possible.

“I’ve been doing a lot of different stuff, seeing the chiropractor, working on it, sleeping in the hyperbaric chamber,” Forte said via Chicagosuntimes.com. “That seems to work pretty well. I just continue to do what I did last time.”

Expect the Bears to use Forte on a limited basis, while Michael Bush gets the bulk of the carries. Forte could be used more in passing situations than in the run game.

The bad news is wide receiver Devin Hester won’t be able to play on Sunday. He has been ruled out with concussion like symptoms, according to the Chicago Tribune.

He has missed just four games in his six NFL seasons. The last time he missed a game was in 2009.

He is third on the team this season in receiving with 18 receptions for 203 yards and one touchdown. He hasn’t really gotten much going in the return game this season. His longest kickoff return is of 38 yards and his longest punt return is of 44 yards.

Eric Weems and Earl Bennett will help fill in for the injured Hester in the return game.

Linebacker Lance Briggs (ankle) was limited in practice on Thursday after not practicing on Wednesday. Cornerback Charles Tillman (ankle) was also limited in practice on Thursday after not practicing on Wednesday.

Other notable injuries for the Bears this week are left guard Chris Spencer (knee) and tight end Kellen Davis (ankle). Spencer has been ruled out this week, while Davis was limited in practice on Thursday.

Expect to see Briggs, Tillman and Davis on the field against the Seahawks on Sunday.

More news to come on these important Bears injuries.

Injury Update: Tillman and Forte Shouldn’t Be Out For Too Long

The Chicago Bears are battling through a number of injuries. They lost right guard Lance Louis (knee) for the season and they could be without left guard Chris Spencer (knee) for one to two weeks.

Wide receiver Devin Hester (concussion) has to pass all the concussion tests in order to get back to playing, while running back Matt Forte (ankle), cornerback Charles Tillman (foot) and Lance Briggs (foot) are also battling through injuries.

Running back Matt Forte sprained his right ankle in the third quarter. It is the same ankle that he sprained in Week Two against the Packers that forced him to miss one game.

According to a league source, the Bears are optimistic that Forte will be able to suit up on Sunday. It should be anticipated that he is limited in practice this week and doesn’t get the bulk of the carries if indeed he is in uniform.

Cornerback Charles Tillman has a chipped bone in his right foot, according to a league source. He has played through injuries in the past and it wouldn’t be a shock to see him on the field on Sunday against the Seahawks.

The injury occurred in the second quarter when Vikings tight end Rhett Ellison stepped on Tillman’s foot. Tillman left the game and was looked at by the Bears medical staff. He re-entered the game a couple times, but was held out of the action in the second half since the score wasn’t that close.

Tillman hasn’t missed a game since 2009. If he can’t play veteran cornerback Kelvin Hayden will start, while D.J. Moore will move back into his role as the nickelback.

Linebacker Lance Briggs was seen with a boot on his right foot after the game on Sunday. No word has been given on the injury other than it isn’t believed to be too serious.

Head coach Lovie Smith will address these injuries on Wednesday sometime during the practice session.

As of right now I’d say Tillman and Briggs will be out there on Sunday, while Forte could be inactive if he isn’t 100%. Hester and Spencer are likely doubtful for Sunday.

Bears Add Veteran Lineman Gurode, Release DT Okoye

The Chicago Bears announced Tuesday that veteran offensive lineman Andre Gurode has signed with the team. Defensive tackle Amobi Okoye was released to make room for Gurode.

Okoye had been a healthy scratch over four of the last five games. Nate Collins took all his playing time away from him. Okoye had just four tackles and one sack in six games this season.

Gurode, 34, adds much needed depth for the Bears on the offensive line. The left guard has appeared in 151 games making 127 career starts (Cowboys, 02-10, Ravens, 11). He was voted to five Pro Bowls (06, 07, 08, 09, 10).

He battled knee injuries during training camp in 2011, but appeared in 13 games, starting five with the Ravens after signing with them before the start of the season.

Starting right guard Lance Louis (knee) was put on injured reserve Monday and left guard Chris Spencer is battling a left knee injury that isn’t believed to be too serious.

Spencer is expected to miss one to weeks due to the torn cartridge in his left knee according to league sources. Expect to see Edwin Williams and Gabe Carimi man the two starting guard spots for now.

Gurode was brought into Halas Hall alongside offensive linemen Lonnie Edwards, Robert Griffin and Derek Dennis according to an NFL source. Dennis was signed to the practice squad.

Gurode is a veteran who has had success in the past. He worked out for the Detroit Lions back in September and has been on the open market since then.

At the least he will be an extra body for the Bears’ offensive line that has been decimated by injuries this season.

Don’t expect too much for the 34-year-old Gurode whose best days are clearly behind him.

“I am in shape, and definitely can help,” he said via Chicagosuntimes.com. “I need to learn the offense and, given the right opportunity, a chance to complete.”

I’m pretty sure the Bears would love to have former first-round pick Chris Williams on the roster right now. Don’t you think?

Quote Of The Day: J’Marcus Webb On Cutler Tying His Shoe On Sunday

When Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler tied left tackle’s J’Marcus Webb’s shoe during a huddle on Sunday he received a round of applause from his teammates.

Webb seemed appreciative of the gesture by Cutler as he realized in the fourth quarter that his shoe wasn’t tied properly.

“Well, I guess before the game I didn’t necessarily loop, swoop and pull tight enough,” Webb said via ESPNChicago.com. “I guess it just came right off. Instead of causing a timeout, we had to … desperate times call for desperate measures. He tied my shoe.”

Webb laughed when told Cutler called it his “fatherly instinct.”

“Oh, my goodness,” Webb said. “That’s great.”

I hope this move by Cutler just shows fans and analysts what kind of guy he really is.

He may do some things that people don’t agree with, but at the end of the day the guy is a leader and he finds ways to win.

Chicago Bears Announce Campbell As Starter For Monday Night With Cutler Healing

Chicago Bears’ Jason Campbell walks off field after failed 4th down play late in 4th quarter of 13-6 loss to Houston Texans during NFL game at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sunday, November 11, 2012. (Scott Strazzante/Chicago Tribune)

The Chicago Bears are still in control sitting on top of the NFC North at 7-2, but if they want to make a deep run into the playoffs they have to start racking up wins again.

Coming off a 13-6 loss against the Houston Texans it certainly doesn’t make the Bears feel too bad about themselves.

But with quarterback Jay Cutler (concussion) hurting and the Bears’ offense struggling to find continuity it could be tough to win on the road.

Backup quarterback Jason Campbell was informed yesterday that he would be the starter on Monday night. The Bears didn’t announce the move until today.

Campbell has started 70 games from 2006-2011 with the Washington Redskins and Oakland Raiders.

The 30-year old Auburn product has 14,511 yards passing, 74 touchdowns, 50 interceptions, a 60.8 completion percentage and a 82.6 passer rating in his eight NFL career.

Last week, he came off the bench in the second half to replace a concussed Jay Cutler. He completed 11 of 19 passes for 94 yards, which included a 45-yard bomb to wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

Even if Cutler was healthy it would likely be a tough matchup against a stout 49ers defense. The Bears are doing the right thing with giving Cutler time to rest.

If he was cleared by the doctors prior to the game, I’d say let him decide if he was ready or not, but its probably best he heals up for the Week 12 matchup against Minnesota.

At 6’5″ Campbell has a bigger frame than Cutler. He has had success scrambling out of the pocket at times, but he seems to be more of a pocket passer than Cutler.

Campbell has 1,075 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns in his career.

The Bears felt comfortable this off-season adding Campbell as the backup on a one-year deal worth $3.5 million.

With a full week of practice with the first-team offense, Campbell will be more prepared than he was on Sunday night. He has a big arm and he could flash that this week.

After the Caleb Hanie experiment a year ago, the Bears had to bring in an established veteran like Campbell. Expect Campbell to have more success this week with the ample amount of practice and more weapons on offense.

That’s right the Bears will get much-needed help on offense this week. Rookie wide receiver Alshon Jeffery will be back on Monday night, which should be huge for this offense.

Tight end Kellen Davis and WR Devin Hester have struggled to make plays with Jeffery out of action with his fractured right hand.

If the Bears’ defense can continue its dominance, there is no reason the Bears can’t win with Campbell under center. Rookie defensive end Shea McClellin (concussion) has been ruled out of Monday night’s game as well.

Campbell is a smart quarterback and that will help him on Monday night at a rowdy Candlestick Park in San Francisco.

Do you think the Bears can beat the 49ers with Campbell running the offense on Monday night?
