Bears Player Preview: Josh Bullocks

joshbullocks_102507

Josh Bullocks signed with the Bears this off-season to compete at the free safety spot, but now since they moved Corey Graham to free safety, Bullocks will compete at the strong safety position.

When the Bears signed Bullocks this is what one New Orleans Saints fan had to say about it:

“I hope Bears fans don’t have any expectations for Bullocks to start (they likely do). As a Saints season ticker holder, I can almost guarantee the Saints have the worst starting safeties in the league… and Bullocks COULDNT EVEN START FOR US. He’s late to reads, miss-times jumps, has terrible hands, doesn’t tackle well and he’s slow. Other than that, he’s a fine player…Goodluck.”

Although he started 51 games in four years, including the playoffs, his best season was his rookie year (2nd round pick) in 2005 and after that he fell off.

He only started six games last season, after starting every game  in his first three seasons.

If he was bad with the one of the worst pass defenses in the Saints, why will he be better with the Bears?

I sure hope he is a backup at best for this secondary.

Bullocks has started games, making tackles, seven interceptions and three forced fumbles.

Corey Graham looks like the starter at free safety this season.

Rashied Davis Will Be Better This Season Because…?

76376561

Rashied Davis will be entering his fifth season with the Bears.

In his first season, 2005, he was strictly a cornerback, who played on special teams.

In 2006, he made the switch to wide receiver and he caught 22 passes, for 303 yards and two touchdowns.

In 2007, he struggled, catching only 17 passes for 165 yards and no touchdowns.

Last season, he was a starter and he caught 35 passes for 445 yards and two touchdowns.

When he made the switch to wide receiver, the Bears used him as the #3 slot receiver and that’s what they’ll use him as this season.

People have talked about him having the case of the drops, but having Jay Cutler should improve his skills as a receiver.

Besides, the Bears have three rookies, Iglesias, Knox, Kinder all looking for playing time.

Devin Hester and Earl Bennett look to be the #1 and #2 wide receivers.

Why will Rashied Davis be better this season?

Rashied Davis will be better this season because he will move back to being the slot receiver and he will have a Pro Bowl quarterback in Jay Cutler throwing him the ball.

Bears Player Preview: Brett Basanez

76439991

Brett Basanez is competing with 2nd year pro Caleb Hanie for the opportunity to backup Jay Cutler.

Basanez was an undrafted free agent out of Northwestern in 2006.

He was picked up by the Carolina Panthers after the draft was over and stayed with them until 2008.

He’s played in one career game, in which, he completed six of 11 passes for 56 yards and one interception for a 30.9 QB rating. He also had two rushing yards.

Basanez, whose from Arlington Heights, IL, broke many records in his days at Northwestern, including passing yards (10,580) and total offense (11,576).

Basanez ranks 13th on the NCAA’s all-time list for total offense, and 28th on the all-time list for passing yards.

He was close to becoming the only player in NCAA history with 10,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards, but fell short with only 996 rushing yards in his four years at Northwestern.

These are the awards Basanez won in his time at Northwestern:

  • Sporting News Freshman All-Big Ten(2002)
  • Honorable mention All-Big Ten (2004)
  • First-team All-Big Ten (2005)
  • Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year (2005)
  • SI.com National Player of the Year (2005)

Basanez will most likely be the third string QB, behind Hanie and Cutler.

Although Basanez doesn’t have any experience he is the veteran type who will know the offense inside and out. The biggest problem with him is his lack of arm strength.

Because Hanie has had a full year with the Bears, I expect to settle in nice as the #2 QB and to be a much different QB. He’s better than any free agent quarterback out there, except Rex Grossman, just kidding.

I like the Bears backup quarterbacks, they both can learn a lot under a guy like Jay Cutler.

This is what Basanez had to say, when the Bears signed him to a contract:

If you’re from Chicago, the Bears just have this mystique about them, it’s just a dream come true. Any time you have a chance to come home, you have to jump on that opportunity.

Bears Player Preview: Kellen Davis

Today I will preview the Chicago Bears’ second fifth round pick, Kellen Davis, on Chicago Bears Player Preview.

This guy is 6’7″ and 262 Ibs.

Kellen Davis will replace TE John Gilmore who left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this off-season.

Kellen Davis enjoyed his years in college at Michigan State.

Davis will take Muhsin Muhammad’s number 87 and he might contribute more than many think.

I can’t remember when the Bears had better tight end’s on their roster.

With veteran Dez Clark, last years first-round pick Greg Olsen and Kellen Davis they looked pretty stacked.

Kellen Davis had 60 career receptions for 789 yards (13.1 avg.) and nine receiving touchdowns in his four year career with the Spartans.

Last season Davis was third on the team with 32 catches for 513 yards and he had six receiving touchdowns.

With those stats, he was named honorable mention All-Big Ten selection.

Not only did he play offensively as a TE and defensively as a DE, but he also played on the field goal/PAT unit on special teams and on the defensive line.

Look for the Chicago Bears to use him like Israel Idonije on the field goal unit, because of his height.

The Bears love drafting athletic players, who are versatile.

He is a fast-developing receiver and has big hands, but needs some more practice at catching the football.

Kellen Davis could be used as a DE, but Lovie Smith said after the draft they selected for his offensive skill not his defensive skills.

Bears coaches have reported that Kellen Davis has looked sharp in training camp.

Look for Kellen Davis to be nice fill in TE if Greg Olsen or Dez Clark goes down with an injury.

Kellen Davis won’t get much playing time unless that happens, but he will get time in goal-line situations

Chicago Bears Player Preview: Earl Bennett

Today I will preview the Chicago Bears other 3rd round pick, Earl Bennett, on Chicago Bears Player Preview.
Personally, I think this guy was a steal in this years NFL Draft.
Bennett set the SEC record for career receptions with 236. In his first two years, no one in the SEC had more receptions than he did. Also, he is the first ever SEC receiver to record 75+ receptions in three seasons.
The 6’1,” 202 Ib wideout is best buds with Chicago Bears first round pick OT Chris Williams (Also from Vanderbilt).
Bennett has reliable hands and just enough speed to go deep. With his above average cutting ability, he is able to shake off defenders. Many thought he was the best play maker at Vanderbilt.
The only thing Bennett needs to work on is his route running.
Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner said this days after they drafted Bennett: “We’ll give him an opportunity to come in and compete right away.” “He’s a very intelligent young man, so he shouldn’t have any trouble picking things up. He’s very competitive, so I know he’ll enjoy coming in and competing.”
Those stats show Bennett can do it all. In 2006, his best season, he recorded 82 receptions for 1,146 yards and earned all-SEC honors for two straight seasons. In his junior year, he received all-SEC honors once again.
In 3 years with the Commodores, Bennett finished with 236 receptions, 2,852 receiving yards, and 20 touchdowns. I like those stats.
Only 21 years old, he reamins unsigned, but is expected compete for that open #1 WR spot. I see him doing just that and becoming the threat that Devin Hester could develop into. It will be hard for a rookie to come in and win the #1 spot. If he doesn’t develop this season, he will down the road.

Chicago Bears Player Preview: Marcus Harrison

Today i will preview Chicago Bears 3rd round pick Marcus Harrison on Chicago Bears Player Preview.

He reminds me of a more athletic Tank Johnson, who we all know had his share of problems. This kid was a risk coming out of the draft because of his off the field issues, but he could easily overcome that by playing alongside Tommie Harris. The only other negative is he has been injured throughout his career at Arkansas.
I see him contributing alongside Tommie Harris, Anthony Adams, Dusty Dvoraveck and Matt Toenia (who many do not know).
Jamie Dukes of NFL Network who regularly makes fun of the Bears QB situation, especially Rex Grossman calls DT Marcus Harrison a “power pig.” That means he clogs up the whole and stops the run with his size.
He was arrested in his senior year for having ecstasy and marijuana in his car, when police pulled him over. Also, he has been hampered with knee and ankle injuries during his college career.
With his size 6’3″-310 i see him help stop the run. In his collegiate career, he played in 38 games from 2004-2007 and recorded 170 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
Even though he has had some negatives in his collegiate career and he doesn’t defend the pass very well, i see him coming into the rotation on defense with Bears. I think he will surprise alot of people, because he was a first round talent until the injuries and off the field issues took place.
