Lance Briggs Named To His Fifth Pro Bowl

88972226EG012_CHICAGO_BEARSSeven year veteran linebacker Lance Briggs was named to his fifth Pro Bowl today. In 14 games this season Briggs has made 106 tackles, two and half sacks and one interception.

In 108 games, Lance Briggs, who is only 29 years old has made 764 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 10 interceptions, four defensive touchdowns and nine forced fumbles over seven seasons.

Briggs has been a real leader for the Bears this season, with Urlacher out Briggs has worn that captain patch with pride. He is a fan favorite and clearly a favorite around the players and coaches of the NFL. It seems like he is one of the most consistent linebackers in the league.

Congratulations Lance, this award is very well deserved. Hopefully when Brian Urlacher comes back next season you Hunter Hillenmeyer and Brian Urlacher will be the best linebackers in the league.

Congrats again.

Top 5 Free Agents Bears Should Target This Off-Season

1. WR Brandon Marshall- At age 25, he has the talent to be a clear cut number one receiver and the Bears clearly need that. I think if he reunited with Cutler they would be in sync once again, but if they want to use Marshall correctly they would have to fire Ron Turner. marshall

2. WR Vincent Jackson- at 6’5″, he has quickly become one of the most dangerous weapons for the San Diego Chargers. He has already matched his touchdown total from last season (7). He is only 26 and would be a great addition to the Bears receiving which is way to small and way to young. Knox, Bennett and Hester are all decent at best. Jackson would be flat out nasty with Cutler throwing him passes.

3. Safety O.J. Atogwe- This guy has been really good over the past four seasons, combining for 18 interceptions and 14 forced fumbles. He is the game changer the Bears need in their secondary. Maybe we can scoop him up from stinky Rams.

4. OL Longan Mankins- This guy is a beast and would be a perfect fit at left guard. He is only 27 and he clearly knows how to play. http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2008/1205/rise_g_lmankins1_300i.jpg

5. OL Marcus McNeill- A former second round pick out of Auburn, McNeill is originally from Chicago and he is one of the better tackles in the NFL. Considering the Orlando Pace project didn’t work, they need help.http://www.exposay.com/celebrity-photos/marcus-mcneill-73-2009-nfl-san-diego-chargers-1Enbsn.jpg

Bill Cowher To Coach The Bears Next Year?

bill-cowherAccording to 670 The Score in Chicago, the Bears recently reached out to CBS analyst Bill Cowher to assess his interest in the team’s head-coaching job should current head coach Lovie Smith be fired.

-The Score’s Hub Arkush claims his source for the report is “impeccable,” despite all of the Bears’ denials. Bill Cowher has previously stated that he would not speak to any teams until the season is over, but perhaps made an exception here. According to Profootballtalk.com, there are “rumors” that Cowher is interested in working for either the Bears or Texans.

I hope this rumor is true, because the Bears need some change and they need it fast. The problem is the Bears owe Lovie Smith $10 million dollars over the next two seasons. They clearly need a new offensive coordinator. Head coach may be to expensive for the Bears management.

71465363CC012_San_Francisco_2_56_47_PMThe Bears are 3-1 in their orange alternate jerseys that they introduced for the first time in 2005.

They will wear those jerseys at home this Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.

Is The Chicago Bears Secondary Acutally Better This Season?

58558763The Chicago Bears pass defense ranked 30th in the NFL last season and the defense as a whole gave up 21.9 points per game.

In the secondary they used Mike Brown, Kevin Payne, Charles Tillman, and Corey Graham. Danieal Manning was used as a nickel back and Nathan Vasher couldn’t stay healthy.

This season the 2009 Bears have sixth rounder Al Afalava starting at strong safety and Danieal Manning playing nickel back and free safety. They also have Charles Tillman and Zack Bowman as their corner backs. It looks like it is working. They also have Kevin Payne, Nathan Vasher and Corey Graham as some good solid depth.

Although this group only has one interception, which was by Charles Tillman against the Steelers. They have been able to control the four teams they have played so far this season, except in game one against Green Bay, when we all remember what Greg Jennings did to Kevin Payne and Nathan Vasher. The passing yardage of the opposing team has increased every game: 150-203-243-308. Teams are completing 62.3 percent of passes against, ranking 23rd overall and allowing 19.5 points per game.

Danieal Manning is clearly the best athlete on this defense because of his ability to play both the nickel and free safety position as well as being a successful blitzer. He was a very a good return man last season and has returned a couple this year, but Johnny Knox is good enough to claim that role. Anyway, Danieal has 30 tackles, tied for third in the NFL among DB’s, and a sack. He doesn’t look anything like the rookie, who struggled in Super Bowl XLI.

Charles Tillman came back from his back surgery sooner than most people thought and has looked solid covering some of the best receivers in the NFL, Calvin Johnson, Santonio Holmes, etc. Zackary Bowman was great this off-season and has looked good at times this season, but he isn’t the most consistent cornerback just yet.

Nathan Vasher and Kevin Payne both blew the game in Green Bay, when Greg Jennings beat them for a long touchdown which won Green Bay the game. They are both former starters, who just can’t get the job done when there in the lineup, but there good depth.

Al Afalava has to be the biggest surprise at strong safety. He was a sixth round pick out of Oregon State and he came into training camp later than most rookies because he had to go back to school. He is a big hitter and has been very consistent. I like him a lot, he reminds of a mixture of Chris Harris and Mike Brown.

Overall this pass defense is clearly better than last season, with a healthy Charles Tillman and a very athletic Danieal Manning this secondary is nice. Bowman and Afalava are very good players as well.

Breaking News: Bears Acquire Gaines Adams From Tampa

gaines-adamsAccording to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Bucs have sent the fourth overall pick in the 2007 draft to Chicago for a 2010 draft pick.  According to the Chicagobears.com, the bears gave up a second-round selection. That means the Bears won’t have first round and second round picks for the second straight draft.

This is a surprise move considering the Bears have been very good at getting to the quarterback this season. But you have to remember Adewale Ogunleye, who is leading the team this season with four and half sacks will be a free agent after this season along with fellow defensive end Mark Anderson.

Gaines Adams disappointed many in Tampa Bay including their head coach Raheem Morris, but the Bears probably think defensive line coach Rod Marinelli will get the first round potential out of Adams. Adams has appeared in 37 games with 29 starts in three seasons, registering 86 tackles, 13½ sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. I like this trade a lot considering how good of player Adams can be, but I really like Adewale Ogunleye and I think this trade signals the end of his time with the Bears. Ogunleye will demand a lot of money this off-season, but the Bears won’t want to give a 33 year old player that kind of dough, I think they’ll go younger and keep Anderson and Adams over Ogunleye. Gaines Adams is signed through 2012, so if he looks good this season the Bears will look very smart. Adams won’t take over Ogunleye’s starting spot, but he’ll be part of the rotation.

Did You Know? 10-13-09

Chicago+Bears+v+Detroit+Lions+kVNjinAsLCNlThe Bears are 3-2 after the bye week under coach Lovie Smith. They lost following their week off in his first two seasons, to the Redskins 13-10 in 2004 and Browns 20-10 in 2005. But they’ve won after their bye week each of the past three years, beating the 49ers 41-10 in 2006, Raiders 17-6 in 2007 and Lions 27-23 in 2008.

49401042Johnny Knox is the first Bears rookie wide receiver to score a touchdown in three straight games since Willie Gault did so in 1983. Only three other Bears (at another position) have accomplished the feat: Running backs Walter Payton in 1975, Anthony Thomas in 2001 and Matt Forte in 2008.
