Speak Up: Pat Mannelly Talks About Decision On Fake Punt

b41e9f4fb96186d150700203256e155_feature

Bears long snapper, Pat Mannelly, who is one of the best in the league at his job said this about his mistake last night:

“Originally the count was 12 men, I didn’t see the guy run off the field. We actually have a play in. If there are 12 men, it’s pretty much a free play. So it’s just a direct snap to Garrett and you just try to get as many yards as you can. I didn’t see the guy run off the field. I wish I would have. I would have never done that.”

“It was just a dumb play on my part not seeing that. I feel stupid. I thought we were making a smart play, and unfortunately it didn’t work out that way.”

Mannelly’s decision lead to a field goal by the Green Bay Packers, to give them a 13-12 lead with about ten minutes left in the fourth quarter. Even though the decision ultimately didn’t cost them the game, Mannelly knows he must never do that again.

Is Jay Cutler The Next Rex Grossman Or The Next Sid Luckman?

88971916JD024_CHICAGO_BEARSYou can’t blame Jay Cutler for the loss to the Packers can you?

I would say no, while others say yes. Why do I say no you ask?

Well, the Bears came out in the first quarter and didn’t establish the run. They went away from what they are known as, a run first offense. They got all enamored in what Jay Cutler can do with his arm, instead of doing the right thing.

Who should you blame for these decisions? I would put all of the blame on coaching, mainly offensive coordinator Ron Turner.

Here’s what Turner had to say about last night:

“I think I was probably trying to do too much, too, we all have to come out try to get a little bit better. I have to get better, everybody in this locker room has to get better and do the things we did well, build on those and eliminate the mistakes. We had too many mistakes.”

In my mind, you can’t just come out passing before setting up the run, especially on the road against your division rival.

We all know Jay Cutler had one touchdown, four interceptions and a 43.2 QB rating, but is he the next Rex Grossman or can he still be the next great one, Sid Luckman. That’s a question every Bears fan thought they knew the answer to, before the season started, but now it looks fuzzy.

Next week the Bears must establish the run against the great defense of the Steelers. The Bears must play as well on defense as the did against the Packers, and probably should look at replacing Nathan Vasher in favor of Zack Bowman, I don’t know just a suggestion.

If the Bears do come out passing once again, Cutler could have a worse game because the Steelers are the best defense in the NFL. Ron Turner could be on the hot seat if he makes the same mistakes. But the best part about all these ifs and buts is that Turner won’t make the same mistakes, because if he does some people in the Windy City might want to rip his head off or maybe something worse.

Cutler is a good quarterback, he just has to get on the same page with his young receivers and his offensive coordinator and make sure the Bears get the victory. I think Cutler got to caught up in his statistics, instead of focusing on the main goal of any game, to win. I mean didn’t former NY Jets coach once say “You play to win the game.”

So, whats your point?

Jay Cutler won’t be the next Rex Grossman, but I don’t know if he is the next Sid Luckman. We’ll find out, but one thing I have to say is the season isn’t close to over, we still have 15 more games to go. We don’t need Jay Cutler to be the best player on the offense, but we sure as hell need him to be a leader.

Report: Brian Urlacher Out 4-6 Weeks

88971916JD020_CHICAGO_BEARSAccording to Footballoutsiders.com, Bears MLB Brian Urlacher will miss 4-6 weeks after undergoing surgery on his dislocated wrist.

That means Hunter Hillenmeyer will fill in at that spot. This could be a real test for him, the guy was in the doghouse last season. The Bears need Urlacher back, but they should definitely wait until he’s healthy, this is a bad break for him.

2001 Chicago Bears: Remember This?

It was January 6, 2002, the Bears were on the verge of clinching the NFC North title for the first time since 1990. The Bears needed to beat Mark Brunell and the Jaguars that day and they did. They picked off Mark Brunell three times. One of the picks was made by 340 pound defensive tackle by the name of Keith Traylor. He returned the pick 67 yards down the field to set the Bears up with up first and goal. The Bears went on to win the game 33-13 and clinch the division, but lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Divisional game.

One thing Bears fans will never forget was that team in 2001, which included young and upcoming stars like Brian Urlacher, Mike Brown, Keith Traylor, Tony Parrish, Bryan Robinson, Olin Kreutz and of course Marty Booker.

Keith Traylor played for eight different teams in his 16 year NFL career, but he will always be remembered for his 67 yard interception return. Keith Traylor your a beast.

Aww.. those were the days.

SI’s Peter King Predicts A Bears-Patriots Super Bowl This Season

89935241Sports Illustrated writer Peter King predicted the whole NFL season in his recent article on SI.com here.

He believes the Chicago Bears will win the NFC North with an 11-5 record, while Green Bay and Minnesota will both make the wild card at 10-6. Also in the NFC, King has the Giants, Seahawks and Falcons all winning their divisions.

He believes the NFC Championship game will be the Bears against the Packers, where the Bears come out on top.

In the AFC, King belives the New England Patriots, San Diego Chargers, Pittsburgh Steelers and the Houston Texans winning their divisions. Thats right the Houston Texans. He also has the Colts and Ravens being the wild card teams.

He has the New England Patriots and San Diego Chargers battling it out in the AFC Championship, where the Patriots win.

Thus meaning the Bears and Patriots will be the Super Bowl teams according to Peter King, and he believes the Patriots will win Super Bowl 44 in Miami. Thus, meaning the Bears would lose the last two Super Bowls that took place in Miami, if Peter King is correct. Hopefully he is right about the Bears making the Super Bowl, but hopefully the come up on top this time in Miami.

The Bears have the talent to do it, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Matt Toeaina: Dusty’s Replacement Speaks Up

78533569Before Bears DT Dusty Dvoracek was officially ruled out for the season with a torn ACL, Matt Toeaina was a player likely to be out of a job. But somehow the third year pro from the University of Oregon has stuck around again. In two seasons with the Bears Toeania has played in four games, recording six tackles.

The Bears have veteran Anthony Adams and up and coming star Marcus Harrison at the top of the depth chart at nose tackle. Look for Toeania to get a lot of work because the Bears like to rotate players around during games to keep them fresh.

Personally I like Matt Toeaina, I’m glad he finally has a shot to contribute for this team, it’s a shame Dusty keeps getting injured because he is a hard worker, but it looks like he won’t be returning next season and if Toeaina takes advantage of this opportunity he could be a big part of the rotation at nose tackle next season.

Matt Toeaina had this to say about Dusty’s injury and his opportunity to play:

“I hate to see this happen to Dusty again, but I’ve definitely got to take advantage of the opportunity, I’ve got to go out there and just have fun and prove to the coaches that I am capable of contributing to this team.”

“It’s definitely tough, the main thing is trying to stay patient and positive at the same time because everybody has their time and when your [number] is called you’ve definitely got to take advantage of it. My opportunities have been limited, but like they say, ‘You can’t count your reps; you’ve got to make your reps count.”

So What?

Look for Matt Toeaina to be a solid contributor on the defense this season and if not the Bears might look for someone else to fill his role.

Dusty Dvoracek Out For Season With Torn ACL In His Knee

71754338The Chicago Tribune’s Vaughn McClure reported this last night:

“Bears nose tackle Dusty Dvoracek is scheduled to undergo an MRI Sunday to determine the severity of a right knee injury, Dvoracek left the field early during the Bears’ 17-3 exhibition win over the Giants Saturday night. He exited the locker room after the game with ice wrapped around the knee. Hours later, he said he would be”fine.”

This morning Chicago Sun-Times writer Brad Biggs reported this:

“Based on his past, it cannot come as a surprise to the Bears that Dusty Dvoracek will miss the 2009 season after tearing the ACL in his right knee Saturday night against the New York Giants.”

My take on the Dusty’s situation:

He is a hardworking player, who has been hit hard with injuries. He hasn’t finished a season yet for the Bears. He missed his rookie season, 2006, after he had foot surgery. He played one game in 2007, until he went down for the season with a torn ACL in his right knee. Last season, 2008, he played 12 games and performed very well until he suffered torn biceps. This seasons injury maybe a career ending injury, because he has torn his ACL in his right knee twice.

The former third round pick is on his last year of his contract. I don’t know if the Bears will want an injury prone player like Dusty on the team, you can’t count on him. This could turn into another Mike Brown situation. It’s a shame this happens to such a good player, who never gives less than a 100% effort.

Whats Next?

Well Marcus Harrison and Anthony Adams will continue splitting reps at nose tackle, while Matt Toeaina steps into the rotation.

Caleb Hanie Ranked Last Among Backup QB’s In The NFL By Sports Illustrated

48806604Many people believe if Bears quarterback Jay Cutler goes down with an injury than the Bears are in serious trouble. Knock on wood that Jay doesn’t.

I’m here to tell you the Bears have a very good backup quarterback. His name is Caleb Hanie. The Bears signed him as an undrafted free agent last season and spent all season behind Grossman and Orton as the third string quarterback.

Sports Illustrated ranked all 32 backup quarterbacks recently and Jeff Garcia is number one and Caleb Hanie is #32. Don Banks of Sports Illustrated says this about Hanie:

“With no veterans like Kyle Orton, Rex Grossman or Brian Griese around to fall back on, Bears fans everywhere will hold their breath this season and wish nothing but perfect health to Jay Cutler.”

I truly believe Caleb Hanie will shock a lot of people if he gets to play at all this season, hopefully not for injury reasons.

The Bears have never had two quarterbacks who are so athletic in Cutler and Hanie.

Trust me NFL fans you will know Caleb Hanies’ name sooner or later. Hanie is ranked last because he has never thrown  a pass in his short NFL career.

I Think I Found The Biggest Chicago Bears Fan

48544721I thought I was the biggest Chicago Bears fan, but I think I found the biggest Chicago Bears of all time.

His name is Glenn Timmermann and he  has the players sign their autographs directly on his body; he then has the autographs traced into a tattoo.

He just recently got all of the players to sign his body at the first night practice at Solider Field last Saturday.

Timmermann has his own website and it’s called Biggestbearsfan.com.

I think there is a big difference between knowing the players and actually having the players on your body. This guy is crazy, but at the same time sord of cool.

He has 96 Bears players autographs on his body and many other Bears tattoos including the Super Bowl XX logo and many assorted Bears logos.

This is guy is clearly the biggest Chicago Bears fan, no one has anything on him. I wonder what his wife says about all these tattoos or maybe he doesn’t have one, haha he probably doesn’t have one if you think about it.
