Week 17 NFL Game Preview: Chicago Bears @ Detroit Lions

The Chicago Bears (9-6) and Detroit Lions (4-11) will meet for the 166th time ever on Sunday.

The Bears lead the all-time series 95-65-6.

The Bears got by the Lions back in Week Seven, 13-7 on Monday Night Football.

Coming off a big 28-13 victory over the Cardinals, the Bears must win to keep their postseason hopes alive. They have to win in Detroit and have the Packers take down the Vikings in Minnesota following their game.

The Lions fell to the Falcons last Saturday night 31-18 as they dropped their seventh straight game.

This NFC North matchup will decide the fate of the Chicago Bears season. Its hard to believe that the Bears have to fight to make the playoffs after starting the season off so hot.

But they have struggled as of late. Luckily if they can win this week they have that chance at showcasing themselves in the 2012 postseason.

They will likely square off against the San Francisco 49ers if everything goes to plan on Sunday. The 49ers own the No. 3 seed in the NFC, while the Packers hold the No. 2 seed.

Injury Report:

Bears’ Safety Chris Conte (hamstring) and LB Blake Costanzo (calf) have both been ruled out after sitting out of practice this week.

LB Brian Urlacher (hamstring) put in a limited practice on Friday after not practicing on Wednesday or Thursday. But his status for Sunday is doubtful.

DT Henry Melton (chest) practiced in full on Friday, while RB Armando Allen (knee) wasn’t able to practice all week. Both players are considered questionable to play. Expect Melton to suit up. Allen isn’t expected to play. The Bears signed RB Harvey Unga off the practice squad, he is expected to be the No. 3 back.

RB Matt Forte (ankle), CB Charles Tillman (ribs/elbow), CB Tim Jennings (shoulder), T Jonathan Scott (hamstring) are all probable after practicing in full on Friday.

Lions’ DT Sammie Hill (toe) has been ruled out after not practicing all week.

TE Brandon Pettigrew (ankle) is doubtful after being limited in practice all week. S Louis Delmas (knee) and CB Chris Houston (hamstring) are both questionable after being limited in practice all week.

The Bears will win if?

The Bears will win if they can take control of the game from the start. RB Matt Forte comes into this game banged up once again, but he has run the ball effectively the last couple of weeks. They will need Matt Forte and Kahlil Bell to carry the load plenty. Jay Cutler has what it takes to win this game, but receivers besides Brandon Marshall have to step up. It won’t be easy on the road against a very good offensive oriented Lions team, but the Bears should have enough to play for this week.

The Bears will lose if?

The Bears will lose if they come out flat. They have had plenty of time off to think about this big game in Detroit, but they can’t afford to come out to pumped up. The Lions have a big weapon in Calvin Johnson and a steady back in Mikel Leshoure. The Lions have plenty of offensive firepower to be able to put points and win the game. Losing the turnover battle will hurt the Bears’ chances as it has over the past couple of weeks.

Players who must step up:

1) WR Alshon Jeffery- The rookie reeled in just one of four targets a week ago in Arizona. He needs to make each target count especially in a big game like this. Look for Jeffery to come out from the start determined to showcase his skills. This could be the best game we see from Jeffery all season long.

Prediction: Five receptions, 66 yards, one touchdown.

2) CB Tim Jennings- Jennings (first time) and Charles Tillman (second time) were named as the starting cornerbacks for the NFC in the Pro Bowl. He had four tackles in his return from a shoulder injury. He is still in some pain from that shoulder injury, but he is ready to go in this one. Expect Jennings to be ready to make plays all afternoon long. The Bears’ defense will be pumped up in this one.

Prediction: Seven tackles.

3) DE Corey Wootton- The third-year end had two tackles last week. He had 2.5 the previous two weeks bringing his season total to seven. He could be in for a treat on Sunday against a Lions’ offense that allows plenty of sacks. Wootton will be able to have some success this week.

Prediction: Four tackles, one sack.

Week 16 NFL Game Preview: Chicago Bears @ Arizona Cardinals

The Chicago Bears (8-6) and Arizona Cardinals (5-9) will meet for the 91st time on Sunday afternoon.

The Bears lead the all-time series 57-27-6.

The Cardinals took care of the Bears the last time these two NFC teams met in 2009, 41-21.

The Bears are coming off a tough 21-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers last Sunday. The loss put the Bears at 8-6 and on the outside looking in to the postseason.

With a win though it will give a Bears a better shot at making the playoffs likely as the sixth seed in the NFC.

After losing nine straight games, the Cardinals crushed the Detroit Lions 38-10 at the University of Phoenix Stadium last week.

The game won’t be easy for the Bears, who have scored 20 or points just once in their last six games. They have dropped five of their last six games and have quickly taken themselves out of contention in the NFC.

But a win can cure a lot of things for the Bears this Sunday.

Injury Report:

Bears’ LB Brian Urlacher (hamstring) didn’t practice all week. He has been ruled out. DT Henry Melton (chest) was limited all week in practice and is listed as doubtful.

WR Earl Bennett (concussion) and CB Tim Jennings (shoulder) practiced on a limited basis this week and are considered questionable to play on Sunday.

LB Geno Hayes (knee) and DE Shea McClellin both put in a full practice on Friday and are considered probable.

Cardinals WR Early Doucet (concussion) and LG Mike Gibson (calf) have been ruled out.

Eight Cardinals are listed as questionable: LB Quentin Groves (foot), TE Rob Housler (knee), S Rashad Johnson (hamstring), T Nate Potter (ankle), S James Sanders (calf), FB Anthony Sherman (knee), TE Ronald Talley (ankle) and DT Dan Williams (hamstring).

The Bears will win if?

The Bears will win if they can get running back Matt Forte going early and often. The Cardinals run defense has been very vulnerable this season and the Bears must take advantage of it. Running the ball effectively will open things up for Jay Cutler and the rest of the Bears’ offense.

The Bears will lose if?

The Bears will lose if they turn the ball over. They have to put together long drives and really strive to be successful on first and second downs. They can’t afford to turn the ball over. If they lose the turnover battle they don’t win very often. It won’t be easy on the road in Arizona, but the Cardinals haven’t been a very good team this season especially on the offensive side of the ball.

Players who must step up:

1) WR Devin Hester- He will be used in the slot if Earl Bennett can’t go on Sunday. He will also get more chances at returning punts and kicks. He has been effective of late, but hasn’t been able to take one all the way. He scored a meaningful touchdown in the comeback against the Cardinals in 2006 at the University of Phoenix Stadium. Here’s to hoping he can do it again.

Prediction: Four catches, 40 yards.

2) S Chris Conte- He had seven tackles a week ago against the Packers, but was penalized for a key pass interference call that turned into a touchdown. He should be able to get things going against a weak quarterback in Ryan Lindley for Arizona. Look for Conte to be active all afternoon long.

Prediction: Eight tackles, one interception

3) LB Lance Briggs- He had nine tackles a week ago against the Packers and was effective in blitzing situations. He should be able to have a good day on Sunday. He will be called upon to shut down Beanie Wells and the Cardinals run game. Look for Briggs to play his best game of the season this week.

Prediction: 11 tackles, 1.0 sack

Score Prediction:

Jake Perper: Chicago Bears 31, Arizona Cardinals 17.

Week 15 NFL Game Preview: Green Bay Packers @ Chicago Bears

The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears will meet for the 186th time ever on Sunday afternoon.

The Bears lead the all-time series 92-87-6.

The Packers defeated the Bears back in Week Two, 23-10 at Lambeau Field. The Packers defense sacked Jay Cutler seven times, Clay Matthews combined for 3.5 sacks.

The Packers have won 12 straight against NFC North opponents. The Packers have won five straight against the Bears outscoring the Bears 116-65 in that span. The last time the Bears beat the Packers was Week Three of the 2010 season when the Bears won 20-17 at Soldier Field.

Cutler is 1-6 all-time against the Packers since coming to the Bears in 2009, throwing six touchdowns and 15 interceptions in seven starts.

In the Week Two meeting this season, Cutler tossed one touchdown compared to four interceptions.

The Bears are coming off a tough 21-14 loss to the Vikings. The loss put the Bears one game back of the Packers in the NFC North.

The Packers beat the Lions last Sunday night 27-20 in the snow.

The game has a ton of meaning for both teams. Packers-Bears is one of the biggest rivalries in the NFL and in sports, so don’t be shocked to see some intense play on Sunday.

The Bears’ defense allows 16.8 ppg which ranks third in the league, while its offense ranks 14th in the league with 23.7 ppg.

The Packers defense allows 21.5 ppg which ranks 14th in the league, while its offense ranks 11th in the league with 24.8 ppg.

Injury Report:

Bears’ LB Brian Urlacher (hamstring), CB Tim Jennings (shoulder) and WR Earl Bennett (concussion) have all been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

Urlacher was never a thought to play this week, but the Bears were hoping they could get Jennings and Bennett back to full strength.

DT Henry Melton (chest) and DE Shea McClellin (knee) are both doubtful after they didn’t participate in practice all week.

Melton hurt his chest last week against the Vikings and was in and out of action. His absence would be a big blow for the Bears’ defense.

McClellin has a sprained MCL and only played in the first half of last week’s game. Corey Wootton and Israel Idonije will have to step up with him likely out.

RB Michael Bush (ribs), LB Geno Hayes (knee) and DT Matt Toeaina (knee) are all questionable to play this Sunday.

Bush participated in practice on a limited basis today after not practicing the past two days. He will be used sparingly against the Packers.

Hayes has practiced on a limited basis the past two days after not practicing on Wednesday. He should be good to go for this one.

Toeaina has practiced on a limited basis all week. He will be counted on especially if Melton is unable to suit up.

DT Stephen Paea (foot) and LG Chris Spencer (knee) are both listed as probable after practicing in full all week.

Paea missed last week with a lingering foot injury and Spencer has missed the past two weeks with a knee injury. Both players will start.

LB Lance Briggs (knee/hip) and QB Jay Cutler (neck/knee) each sat out practice on Wednesday. They participated on a limited basis on Thursday and practiced in full on Friday.

Cutler was forced to miss the final offensive drive for the Bears last week due to a neck injury. Briggs has been battling a hip issue as of late. Both players are ready to start.

Also, TE Kellen Davis (knee) practiced in full Friday after being limited in practice the past two days. He should be ready to go in this one.

Packers WR Jordy Nelson (hamstring), CB Charles Woodson (collarbone), RB James Starks (knee) and DE C.J. Wilson are all out for this game after not practicing this week.

WR Donald Driver (thumb), LB Terrell Manning (shoulder) and G Josh Sitton (hip) are all questionable after practicing on a limited basis all week.

The Bears will win if?

The Bears will win if they can win the time of possession battle. They need to start off fast. The previous five losses against the Packers they’ve failed to get off to fast starts. They need to get Matt Forte going early and often. Getting Forte involved in the passing game will only be an added bonus. A win isn’t totally out of the question especially considering the Bears have to win this to keep their hopes of winning the NFC North alive.

The Bears will lose if?

The Bears will lose if they let Aaron Rodgers make plays with his legs. Rodgers can be a killer at extending plays with his legs and the Bears must do his best to contain Rodgers scrambling abilities. Losing the turnover battle typically leads to losses for the Bears, so that could turn out to be a serious problem if they can’t win that category. It won’t be easy against a very good Packers team. The Bears can’t let the Packers come out of the gate scoring points. It would be really tough to come back. Just look at what happened last week against Minnesota.

Players who must step it up:

1. Alshon Jeffery- He reeled in three catches for 57 yards and a touchdown last week in his first game back from a minor knee injury. His 30-yard touchdown reception was impressive, but he dropped a what appeared to be a touchdown catch. He also slipped on the turf in the first quarter forcing Jay Cutler’s pass to be intercepted. He is a rookie, so the Bears can’t expect the same from him that they can of Brandon Marshall. But he certainly needs to step up especially when he can make a play. Too many times have the Bears receivers made mistakes the past this season. Jeffery can certainly redeem himself this week.

Prediction: Five catches, 70 yards.

2. Corey Wootton- He continues to impress this season. The third-year end has 5.5 sacks through 13 games this season 4.5 more than his total during his first two seasons. He has earned plenty of playing time with Israel Idonije struggling and Shea McClellin healing. He has to be a big factor against the Packers weak offensive line this week if the Bears want to win.

Prediction: Four tackles, one sack.

3. Charles Tillman- He continues to be rock solid this season. He hasn’t reeled in an interception as of late, but he is the best cornerback on the defense. He forced a fumble last week of Adrian Peterson. He is the best at stripping the ball away. The Bears could certainly use some of his punch out skills against the Packers in this big matchup.

Score predictions:

Jake Perper: Chicago Bears 24, Green Bay Packers 23.

Matt Eurich: Green Bay Packers 23, Green Bay Packers 13.

Qwikcast.com Weather Report:

Cloudy with a 30 percent chance of showers. Highs in the upper 40s. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph early in the morning becoming west 10 to 20 mph in the late morning and afternoon.

Week 14 Game Preview: Chicago Bears @ Minnesota Vikings

The Chicago Bears (8-4) travel to the Mall of America Field on Sunday to battle the Minnesota Vikings (6-6).

The meeting will be the 104th ever between the two NFC North rivals. The Bears trail the all-time series 49-52-2.

The Bears beat the Vikings two weeks ago 28-10 at Soldier Field.

The Bears are coming off a tough 23-17 overtime loss against the Seahawks. They blew a 14-10 lead with roughly four minutes left in the game.

The Vikings are coming off a 23-14 loss against the Packers. They have dropped two straight games after posting a 6-4 record prior to their Week 11 bye week.

The Bears currently hold the top wild card spot in the NFC. If the season ended today they would travel to New York to battle the Giants (7-5).

They are tied with the Packers in the NFC North, but Green Bay holds the tiebreaker winning the Week Three matchup against the Bears and holding a better record against NFC North opponents.

With three of four games against the NFC North left on the schedule for the Bears, the final stretch is crucial for them.

The Vikings are looking to save their season behind a struggling Christian Ponder and a impressive Adrian Peterson on offense.

The Bears’ defense allows 16.5 ppg which ranks second in the league, while its offense ranks 13th in the league with 24.5 ppg.

The Vikings’ defense allows 22.7 ppg which ranks 18th in the league, while its offense ranks 18th in the league with 21.8 ppg.

Injury Report:

Bears middle linebacker Brian Urlacher has been ruled out and could be out up for the rest of the season with a Grade 2 hamstring injury he suffered a week ago.

Cornerback Tim Jennings (shoulder) and WR Earl Bennett (concussion) have both been ruled out after suffering injuries against the Seahawks.

Defensive tackle Stephen Paea (foot), running back Michael Bush (ribs), guard Chris Spencer (knee) were all limited in practice this week and are questionable to play. Expect Paea and Bush to suit up, while Spencer spends the rest of this week getting his knee back to full strength.

Wide receivers Alshon Jeffery and Devin Hester are set to return this week after putting a full practice in on Friday. Offensive lineman Gabe Carimi was limited with a hamstring injury on Wednesday and Thursday, but practiced in full on Friday and will start at right guard.

Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin was put on injured reserve Thursday with an ankle injury and his presence will be greatly missed on offense for Minnesota.

Defensive end Jared Allen sat out of practice Wednesday and Thursday with a back injury, but practiced in full on Friday and will start in this game.

Linebacker Jasper Brinkley (shoulder), tackle Phil Loadholt (knee), tight end Kyle Rudolph (shoulder), center John Sullivan (ribs/knee) all practiced in full on Friday after being limited the prior two days. All four Vikings are probable and will suit up on Sunday.

The Bears will win if?

The Bears will win if they can get a consistent pass rush on defense. With the Vikings relying heavily on running back Adrian Peterson as of late and likely in this one the Bears’ defense has to get into the backfield often. They will force Ponder to throw which should be the plan considering the Vikings won’t have the services of Percy Harvin. A solid rushing attack on offense with a healthy Matt Forte will help the Bears win the time of possession battle. Getting wide receiver Alshon Jeffery back from a knee injury will help this offense get things going.

The Bears will lose if?

The Bears will lose if they can’t run effectively. We’ve seen at times Matt Forte hasn’t been the same back as years past. Adrian Peterson has had a great success against the Bears in his career and he will likely get 20-25 carries with the Vikings’ passing game struggling. The Bears are banged up on defense and the Vikings will try to attack the middle of the field where Brian Urlacher usually to hover around. Getting off to a slow start will also plague the Bears. We’ve seen that often in their four previous games.

Players who must step up:

1. Geno Hayes- He moves into the starting lineup as the strongside linebacker with Nick Roach moving to the middle for the injured Brian Urlacher . Hayes has eight tackles this season playing mostly on special teams. He has had success in the past playing in the Cover 2 with Tampa Bay. He will have to be steady  if he wants to keep his job because if he can’t the Bears’ defense could be in trouble.

Prediction: Six tackles.

2. Alshon JefferyThe rookie returns at a perfect time. With Earl Bennett out with a concussion and Devin Hester returning from a concussion, Jeffery will be counted on to contribute plenty on offense. The question is can he handle that much responsibility after sitting out with a minor knee injury. Look for him to be targeted plenty with Cutler’s second favorite target in Bennett out of action.

Prediction: Five catches, 62 yards.

3. Nate Collins He has been a pleasant surprise on defense this season. The third-year pro out of Virginia has eight tackles and one pass deflection in six games this season. He impressed the Bears so much that they released Amobi Okoye. Collins doesn’t have the stats to show for his hard work. He has often been there for a key pressure however. Look for him to come up with a couple of nice plays with Stephen Paea playing battling a foot injury.

Prediction: Three tackles, one fumble recovery.

Score predictions:

Jake Perper: Chicago Bears 24, Minnesota Vikings 17.

Matt Eurich: Chicago Bears 20, Minnesota Vikings 17.

Week 13 NFL Game Preview: Seattle Seahawks @ Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears (8-3) welcome the Seattle Seahawks (6-5) to Soldier Field on Sunday.

This will be the 16th meeting between the two NFC teams. The Seahawks lead the all-time series 9-6 last beating the Bears in 2011, 38-14.

The Bears are coming off a solid 28-10 win over the Vikings last Sunday at Soldier Field. The win put the Bears back in first place a spot they have held every week this season but one.

Unfortunately the Bears come into this game a little banged up. RG Lance Louis (knee) was put on injured reserve this week, while LG Chris Spencer (knee) has been ruled out for this game. WR Devin Hester (concussion) was also ruled out.

The other key injuries, Charles Tillman (ankle), Lance Briggs (ankle), and Matt Forte (ankle) don’t appear to be too serious as all three starters will play in this one.

The Seahawks fell to the Dolphins last week 24-21 as they allowed 17 fourth quarter points. Rookie QB Russell tossed two touchdown passes in the game as he continues to be solid under center for Seattle.

The Bears’ offense ranks 11th in the league in points scored with 25.2 ppg , the Bears’ defense allows the second fewest ppg in the league (15.9).

The Seahawks offense ranks 23rd in the league in points scored with 19.9 ppg, the Seahawks defense allows the third fewest ppg in the league (16.8).

Injury Report:

Bears WR Devin Hester (concussion) and LG Chris Spencer (knee) have both been ruled out for this game. WR Alshon Jeffery (knee) did not practice this week and is doubtful to play.

LB Lance Briggs, CB Charles Tillman, RB Matt Forte, TE Kellen Davis all participated fully in practice on Friday despite their ankle injuries.

Seahawks CB Marcus Trufant (hamstring) is doubtful after not practicing all week. DE Red Bryant (foot) and LB LeRoy Hill (ankle) are questionable after not practicing this week.

WR Sidney Rice suffered a calf injury in practice this week and was only able to practice on a limited basis on Friday, he is considered questionable.

The Bears will win if?

The Bears will win if they can control the ball. They can’t afford to turn the ball over. They need to stick with the run with Forte and Bush. Cutler will complete passes if they can run effectively. Run the ball effectively and control the clock and it should lead to win #9 for the Bears.

The Bears will lose if?

The Bears will lose if they just can’t stop Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch. Lynch has been solid all season long for the Seahawks and he could be a lot to handle. Rookie QB Russell Wilson has shown why head coach Pete Carroll trust him so much as he has been impressive at times. The Bears have to score early and often if they want to put these hungry Seahawks away otherwise it could be a long afternoon at Soldier Field.

Players who must step up:

1. Kellen Davis-  He needs to step up and finally have a breakout game. With Brandon Marshall facing a tough matchup against Seahawks cornerback CB Richard Sherman, Davis could find some openings in the middle of the field. It would be nice to see him step up for once.

Prediction:  Three catches, 43 yards, one touchdown.

2. Major Wright- He is a great run stopper, but hasn’t been that solid on the back end as of late. It’s time for Wright to make some plays. He has three interceptions on the season. He should be flying around all afternoon tomorrow.

Prediction:  Six tackles, one fumble recovery.

3. Julius Peppers- The Bears need Peppers to make more plays on defense. He came up with his 12th career blocked field goal last Sunday, but failed to record a sack. He has six sacks on the season, but he needs to really play up to his capabilities. The Bears want to see him get some big sacks it will only make things easier for this defense.

Prediction: Four tackles, 1.0 sack.

Score predictions:

Jake Perper: Chicago Bears 27, Seattle Seahawks 17.

Matt Eurich: Chicago Bears 20, Seattle Seahawks 13.

Qwikcast.com Weather Report:

Mostly cloudy. A 20 percent chance of light showers in the morning. Unseasonably warm. Highs in the lower 60s. West winds 10 to 15 mph.

Week 12 NFL Game Preview: Minnesota Vikings @ Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears (7-3) host the Minnesota Vikings (6-4) on Sunday at Soldier Field.

The meeting will be the 103rd ever between the two NFC North rivals. The Bears trail the all-time series 48-52-2.

The Bears swept the season series against the Vikings last season and haven’t allowed them to win at Soldier Field since 2008.

The Bears are coming off an ugly 32-7 loss to the 49ers on Monday night. Nothing went right for them on either side of the ball. The good news is Jay Cutler will be under center on Sunday.

LG Chilo Rachal was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list this week, so he is done for the season. Veteran Chris Spencer will take his spot in the starting lineup.

Jonathan Scott is expected to see time either for J’Marcus Webb or Gabe Carimi. Both tackles have struggled mightily the past couple of weeks.

The Vikings were on a bye last week. The week earlier they defeated the Lions 34-24 at home.

Both the Bears and Vikings are sitting behind the Green Bay Packers (7-3) for the division lead. This a big game for both teams. The Bears meet Minnesota again in Week 14, so this could decide a lot of things going forward.

The Bears’ defense allows 16.5 ppg which ranks fourth in the league, while its offense ranks 11th in the league with 24.9 ppg.

The Vikings’ defense allows 22.1 ppg which ranks 13th in the league, while its offense ranks 15th in the league with 23.8 ppg.

Injury Report:

Bears rookie WR Alshon Jeffery returned last week after fully healing from a hand injury, but he suffered a knee injury last Monday night and is expected to be out two to four weeks. He didn’t practice all week and has been ruled out.

QB Jay Cutler (concussion) is visiting a neurologist today, so we should know if he will able to start on Sunday sometime later today.

TE Kellen Davis (ankle) didn’t practice Wednesday and Thursday, but was able to practice on a limited basis on Friday. He is considered questionable.

QB Jason Campbell (ribs) and WR Brandon Marshall (ribs) were limited in practice Wednesday and Thursday but practiced fully on Friday. Rookie defensive end Shea McClellin (concussion) practiced fully all week after missing last week’s game.

Vikings WR Percy Harvin (ankle) did not practice all week and is considered doubtful for this game.

DT Letroy Guion (foot) was limited all week, while G Charlie Johnson (toe) was limited on Friday after not practicing the days prior. Both are considered questionable.

The Bears will win if?

The Bears will win if they can get a consistent pass rush on defense. Ponder doesn’t have Percy Harvin this week, so the Vikings will be looking to run more often, which could help the Bears’ defense be more sound on the back end. The Bears’ offense has tried to establish the run game on offense as of late but the running lanes haven’t been there. They need to get Forte going early in this game if they want to come away with the win.

The Bears will lose if?

The Bears will lose if they simply lose focus. They lost focus last week and they got blown out because of it. The Vikings will be looking to get defensive end Jared Allen to abuse left tackle J’Marcus Webb. It won’t be easy against a solid Vikings defense and a Vikings offense that brings the NFL’s leading rusher in Adrian Peterson to Soldier Field. Both teams know the importance of this game, so it should be a battle all afternoon long.

Players who must step up:

1. Israel Idonije- He has 4.5 sacks on the season, which is 0.5 less than his 2011 total. Over the past four weeks, he has 13 tackles and 1.0 sack during that span. He is a solid end, but he needs to step up on Sunday because the past few weeks the Bears pass rush has been non-existent.

Prediction: Four tackles, 1.0 sack.

2. Matt Forte- He is averaging just 71.2 ypg rushing and 20 ypg receiving this season. He has rushed for 102 yards over the past two weeks. He needs to get going early and often on Sunday because the Bears really pride themselves on running the ball. Look for him to have a big day against the Vikings’ defense.

Prediction: 20 carries, 102 yards. Four receptions, 25 yards, one touchdown.

3. Earl Bennett- He has 18 receptions on 36 targets for 193 yards this season. He has nine receptions for 84 yards over the past four weeks. He certainly needs to become involved in the passing game now that Alshon Jeffery is out again. Expect to see him in the mix more often since Jay Cutler is under center.

Prediction: Four receptions, 43 yards.

Score predictions:

Jake Perper: Chicago Bears 23, Minnesota Vikings 17.

Matt Eurich: Chicago Bears 27, Minnesota Vikings 10.

Qwikcast.com Weather Report:

Partly cloudy. Highs in the mid 40s. West winds 10 to 15 mph.

Week 11 NFL Game Preview: Chicago Bears @ San Francisco 49ers

The Chicago Bears (7-2) travel to Candlestick Park on Monday night to battle the San Francisco 49ers (6-2-1).

The Bears are 29-31-1 all-time against the 49ers. Since 1985, the Chicago Bears are 0-7 against the 49ers in San Francisco.

The last time these two teams met was in 2009, when the 49ers beat the Bears 10-6 in an ugly Thursday night game in San Francisco.

The Bears are coming off a 13-6 loss against the Texans last week. They not only lost the game, but they lost starting quarterback Jay Cutler (concussion). Jason Campbell will start for the first time this season for the Bears.

The 49ers are coming off a 24-24 tie against the Rams last week. It was the first tie in the NFL since 2008. The 49ers also lost their starting quarterback Alex Smith (concussion). He has yet to be cleared by the doctors to play and we might not find out if he will suit up until Monday afternoon.

Both teams sit a top their divisions and could wind up with the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the NFC if they continue to play well.

This is a big prime-time game. The Bears need a win to add some more separation from the Packers and Vikings. The 49ers need a win to add some more separation from the Seahawks and Cardinals.

So, with so much on the line for these two impressive NFC foes, who will win?

The 49ers’ defense allow the least amount of points per game(14.1), the third least total yards per game (292.1) and the fifth least passing yards per game (196.8).

The Bears’ defense allow 14.9 points per game, which is ranked second least in the league.

Injury Report:

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler (concussion) has been ruled out. Jason Campbell was named as the starting quarterback publicly on Friday, but he knew he’d be the starter prior to Thursday’s practice.

Rookie defensive end Shea McClellin (concussion) has also been ruled out. Look for Cheta Ozougwu to take his spot in the defensive end rotation.

Rookie wide receiver Alshon Jeffery (hand) will return Monday night after practicing fully the past two days. He should move back into the starting lineup opposite Brandon Marshall.

49ers quarterback is Alex Smith (concussion) is listed as questionable after practicing on a limited basis all week. He will reportedly start tonight.

The Bears will win if?

The Bears will win if they can run the ball effectively. It could be tough considering the 49ers’ defense who allows just 95.3 ypg and 3.7 ypc. The Bears need an established ground game with Matt Forte because it will take pressure off Campbell and it will open things especially in the middle of the field. It won’t be easy, but the Bears can win this game by simply playing smart football. Campbell is a smart quarterback, so there really isn’t  a huge drop off with him under center in my mind.

The Bears will lose if?

The Bears will lose if they let the 49ers boss them around. In San Francisco, the Bears have struggled for a while now, but they can’t think about the past. They won’t be able to win if they just come out flat and try things not in their comfort zone. The 49ers are an all-around team and the Bears shouldn’t try to do too much. Keeping the turnovers down will be key because the Bears have showed that if they turn the ball over often they really struggle to stay in games.

Players who must step up:

1. Alshon Jeffery- He returns at a good time considering the Bears really don’t really have a true No. 2 option. He should take the pressure off Marshall and open things up for other receivers like Earl Bennett and Devin Hester. Don’t be shocked to see the Bears lean heavily on Jeffery especially in the redzone. Campbell should look his way often because the 49ers will be trying hard to shut down Marshall.

Prediction: Five catches, 52 yards.

2. Lance Briggs- He has been kind of quiet the past two weeks racking up just nine tackles during that span. He has two forced fumbles, two interceptions and 52 tackles this season. He has been one of the steadiest players on this defense, but he knows he needs to create more turnovers and help get the Bears’ offense the ball. He should be in line for a solid game.

Prediction: Nine tackles, one fumble recovery.

3. Charles Tillman- You might be thinking he doesn’t need to step up because he has been the guy all season long. With seven forced fumbles and two interceptions he has been one of the best players on this defense if not the best. I just think its time for him to make some big plays in this big NFC matchup. It’s a big game and Bears defenders typically make big plays in big games especially Tillman.

Prediction: Seven tackles, one forced fumble.

Week 10 NFL Game Preview: Houston Texans @ Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears (7-1) welcome the Houston Texans (7-1) to Soldier Field for a big Sunday night matchup.

The Bears are 0-2 all-time against the Texans. The last time these two teams met was in 2008, when the Texans knocked off the Kyle Orton led Bears in 2008, 31-24.

The Bears are coming off a 51-20 blowout win over the Titans in Week Nine.

The Texans won their second game in a row last week, 21-9 over the Bills.

Houston’s only loss this season came in Week Six against Green Bay. The Bears only loss came in Week Two against Green Bay as well.

This is arguably the biggest matchup this season for the Bears since Week Two at Green Bay or Week Four at Dallas.

Both the Bears and Texans have elite defenses this season.

The Texans have a gem in J.J. Watt, who has 10.5 sacks this season.

The Bears have scored seven defensive touchdowns off passes, which is one more than the Dolphins, Panthers and Chiefs offenses.

The Bears won the games that they needed to against Carolina and Tennessee. Sitting at 7-1 the road ahead isn’t easy.

After Sunday night’s clash with the AFC best Texans, they head to San Francisco the following Monday night than welcome Minnesota and Seattle to town the next two weeks.

The Bears are second in points allowed per game (15.0) and are third in points scored per game (29.5).

The Texans have similar rankings this season. They are fourth in points allowed per game (17.1) and are second in points scored per game (29.6).

Injury Report:

Bears’ WR Alshon Jeffery (hand) is doubtful for this game, but made progress by practicing on a limited basis on Friday. He is aiming to return against the 49ers next Monday night.

Defensive lineman Israel Idonije (ankle) and Henry Melton (back) both were banged up after the game in Tennessee, but appear to be ready to go after practicing fully the past two days. Also, DT Matt Toeaina (calf) is doubtful for this game.

The Texans have a few key injuries. TE Owen Daniels (back) is questionable after not practicing Wednesday or Thursday, but he was able to practice on a limited basis on Friday.

RB Ben Tate (hamstring) and NT Shaun Cody (ribs) have been ruled out. Starting CB Jonathan Joseph (quadricep) was able to practice fully on Friday after practicing on a limited basis the past two days.

The Bears will win if?

The Bears will win if they can score first in this game. This will likely be a defensive battle, so the Bears have to make sure they can get on top first or they could be in for a long night. Getting Forte and Marshall into the mix early on is very important. I think getting Forte involved in the passing game could really help them thrive on Sunday night.

The Bears will lose if?

The Bears will lose if they get caught up in solely stopping Texans’ RB Arian Foster. I know stopping him is key for this game, but their are so many weapons on this Texans’ offense that can find openings if you given space. The Bears have to continue what their doing well on defense, bringing pressure with their front four. If they can’t get pressure the Texans will attack the middle field all night long.

Players who must step up:

1) Gabe Carimi- He has struggled the past few weeks with penalties and protection issues. He needs to step up in this game because he will likely see a heavy dose of either J.J. Watt or Antonio Smith. He hasn’t played up to his talent level just yet. Sunday night would be the best time for him to put a complete game together.

2) Julius Peppers- He is tied for first on the team with five sacks, but he has had some games where he has disappeared. In games against the Colts, Cowboys and Jaguars he combined for just five tackles. He has seven tackles in two career games against Houston. He is still one of the best defensive ends in the league. The Bears need him to be the best player on the field in this one.

Prediction: Four tackles, 2.0 sack.

3) Major Wright- He is second on the team with three interceptions. He has been a play-maker in his second full season as a starter. He needs to stay in his zone on the back end and not allow any big throws. The Bears have been good at limiting big plays from defenses and Wright is a big reason for that. Look for him to be a star on Sunday night.

Prediction: Five tackles, one interception

Week Nine NFL Game Preview: Chicago Bears @ Tennessee Titans

The Chicago Bears (6-1) and the Tennessee Titans (3-5) will meet for the 11th time ever on Sunday afternoon.

The all-time series is tied 5-5. The Titans beat the Bears 21-14 the last time these two teams squared off in 2008.

This is only the second time the Bears will take on the Titans at LP Field. QB Craig Krenzel was under center the last time the Bears traveled to Tennessee in 2004.

The Bears are coming off a 23-22 win over the Panthers. It was almost a letdown, but the Bears rallied back in crunch time and won their fifth straight game.

After starting the season 1-4, the Titans have won two of their last three games. Despite a solid ground attack and efficient air attack, Tennessee fell to Indianapolis last week 19-13 in overtime.

This game won’t be easy for the Bears. Considering the tough schedule ahead the Bears can’t look past this one.

The Bears are second in points allowed per game (14.3) and are eighth in points scored per game (26.4).

The Titans on the other hand are second to last in points allowed per game (32.1) and are 21st in points scored per game (20.2).

Injury Report:

Bears’ WR Alshon Jeffery (hand) has been ruled out for the third straight week. LB Lance Briggs was limited in practice on Thursday (toe), but practiced in full on Friday.

The Titans have ruled out G Leroy Harris (knee) and LB Patrick Bailey (ribs). QB Jake Locker is doubtful (left shoulder) as he practiced on a limited basis all week.

T David Stewart (knee), CB Tommie Campbell (ankle), and LB Will Witherspoon (hamstring) were all limited in practice this week and are considered questionable at this point.

The Bears will win if?

The Bears will win if they can limit their turnovers. Too often this season we’ve seen it take almost a half of football for Jay Cutler and Co. to get things going offensively. If the offense can mix things up and control the clock it will make it that much easier for the defense. More offensive production will likely lead to a seventh win for the Bears.

The Bears will lose if?

The Bears will lose if they lose focus. They can’t let QB Matt Hasselbeck complete big passes downfield. The must limit his opportunities. They will likely be stacking the box to stop RB Chris Johnson, so they might give him some chances, but safeties Chris Conte and Major Wright can’t give up those big plays. If Hasslebeck completes those passes downfield early and often, the Bears could be in for a long day.

Players who must step up:

1. Corey Wootton- The third year end has three sacks and two forced fumbles on the season. Last week against the Panthers he made two solo tackles and deflected a pass. He has been active in the defensive end rotation all season long. He could have a nice game against a banged up Titans offensive line.

Prediction: Four tackles, 1.0 sack.

2. Earl Bennett- I like what Bennett did last week. He came up with key catches late in the game and really sparked the Bears’ offense. He doesn’t put up big numbers, but he makes big plays. Look for him to thrive this week against a week Titans pass defense.

Prediction: Five catches, 59 yards.

3. D.J. Moore- He isn’t satisfied with his play as of late and either is nickelbacks coach Mikal Smith. With too many missed tackles, Moore knows now is the time to step up. He is shown he is a solid playmaker at times, but has been too incosistent. With veteran Kelvin Hayden pushing him for playing time, Moore knows the task at hand. Look for Moore to be flying all around on Sunday.

Prediction: Seven tackles, one fumble recovery.

Score predictions:

Jake Perper: Chicago Bears 30, Tennessee Titans 20.

Matt Eurich: Chicago Bears 24, Tennessee Titans 20.

Week Eight NFL Game Preview: Carolina Panthers @ Chicago Bears

The Carolina Panthers (1-5) and the Chicago Bears (5-1) will meet for the eighth time ever on Sunday afternoon.

The Bears lead the all-time series 4-3. Last season, the Panthers came to Soldier Field and fell short 34-29, but gave the Bears everything they had.

The Bears will don their alternate jerseys on Sunday that honor the 1940′s “Monsters of the Midway.”

The Bears are coming off a 13-7 victory over the Detroit Lions and are currently riding a four-game winning streak.

The Panthers lost 19-14 to Dallas and starting quarterback Cam Newton wasn’t pleased with his team after the game whatsoever.

“The past couple of games have been the same script, by the same director,” Newton said via Carolinapanthers.com. “It’s kind of getting boring. This taste, this vibe — I’m not buying it, man. And I don’t know what it is, but something’s going to have to change. Something’s going to have to change real fast.”

This is a big game for both teams, obviously the Panthers can’t afford another loss and the Bears have to take advantage of Minnesota’s Thursday night loss to Tampa Bay.

The Bears have allowed the least amount of points per game (13.0) and have scored the seventh most points per game (27.0).

The Panthers on the other hand are 20th in points allowed per game (24.0) and are 28th in points per game (17.7).

The Bears should be able to come away with their sixth victory against a disappointing Panthers team.

Next week against Tennessee is very winnable as well, but the Bears can’t look ahead. They have to keep their focus.

The best teams are focused week in and week out and the Bears must do so to keep their impressive start going.

Injury Report:

Bears’ WR Alshon Jeffery (hand) has been ruled out for the second straight week. QB Jay Cutler (ribs) was limited on Wednesday, but practiced fully the last two days and will start. If the game gets out of hand you could see backup QB Jason Campbell a bit.

CB Sherrick McManis (hip) practiced fully all week and should be ready to help on special teams.

The Panthers recently lost starting defenders, CB Chris Gamble (shoulder) and LB Jon Beason (knee) for the season.

They will likely be without two of their rotational defensive ends, Antwan Applewhite (thigh) and Thomas Keiser (elbow).

The Bears will win if?

The Bears will win if they get Matt Forte going early and often. Getting Forte going early in this one will help the Bears win the time of possession and could set up a few redzone opportunities for Jay Cutler and Co. It won’t be easy stopping Cam Newton, but the Bears’ defense is much more disciplined this season which should help them on Sunday.

The Bears will lose if?

The Bears will lose if they can’t convert on third downs. The Panthers defense is weak, but the Bears sometimes play down to their opponents level. The Panthers will attack on defense and the Bears need to make sure they cover Newton’s favorite targets Steve Smith and ex-Bear Greg Olsen. If they allow Newton ample time they could be in for a long day.

Players Who Must Step Up:

1. Michael Bush-The Bears have limited his carries the past two weeks (10), but he has made the most of them by racking up 62 yards. He has made some nice plays by hurdling over defenders with ease. If the Bears get near the goal-line early look for Bush to pound in the rock. He could be in line for a few rushing touchdowns if the Bears attack early.

Prediction: Seven rushes, 45 yards, one touchdown.

2. Henry Melton-He’s been rather quiet as of late racking up just eight tackles, one and half sacks and a forced fumble over the past three outings. He is a presence who demands a double team. With that being said it could be tough for him to make plays, but I just have a gut feeling Melton will dominate in this one.

Prediction: Five tackles, one sack, one fumble recovery.

3. Chris Conte-He nearly reeled in his second interception of the season last week against Detroit. He has racked up 21 tackles over the past three games and has looked really comfortable next to Major Wright in the secondary. They are quickly becoming one of the better safety tandems. Look for Conte to help stop the run and make big plays on the back end. He should be ready for a big matchup against Panthers athletic quarterback Cam Newton.

Prediction: Eight tackles, one pass deflection.

Final score predictions

Jake Perper: Chicago Bears 30, Carolina Panthers 17.

Matt Eurich: Chicago Bears 34, Carolina Panthers 10.

Weather.com Weather Report:

Mostly cloudy with isolated rain showers. Highs in the upper 40s. North winds 10 to 20 mph. Gusts up to 30 mph late in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation 20 percent.
