News & Notes: Ogunleye and Vasher Find Homes, Hillenmeyer Out For The Season

Former Bears Adewale Ogunleye and Nathan Vasher have signed with teams. Adewale Ogunleye found a home in Houston where they lost the staring DE opposite Mario Williams, Connor Barwin. Barwin dislocated his right ankle.

The Texans also added veteran DE Ryan Denney, who will split time with Ogunleye across from Mario Williams.

Nathan Vasher used to be known as the “Interceptor” signed with the Chargers this off-season, but they let him go and yesterday he signed with the Detroit Lions.

Vasher will replace starter Aaron Berry, who was lost for the season with a right shoulder injury. Vasher will likely see time against the Eagles.

In Other News:

Bears linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer has been put on injured reserve. Hillenmeyer sustained a concussion in preseason and he was removed from Sunday’s game because he became ill. Losing Hillenmeyer hurts the depth of the team, he was the primary backup to Brian Urlacher.

The Bears added former Bills LB Marcus Buggs to the practice squad and to fill his spot they released WR Greg Matthews.

The Bears added LB Rod Wilson to the 53 man roster to take Hunter Hillenmeyer’s spot.

Josh Beekman tried out with Seahawks because of they are dealing with a number of injuries on the offensive line. Beekman was one of three players who worked out for Seattle yesterday.

Bears RB Matt Forte earned the NFC player of the week with his 201 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns. Forte is the first Bears running back to win the the weekly award since Anthony Thomas in 2001.

News & Notes: Bears Secondary Issues and SI.com’s Bears Prediction

Third round pick from UF, safety Major Wright is ready to go for week one. Unfortunatly there is no spot for him in the starting lineup as of right now.

Danieal Manning and Chris Harris have locked down the starting safety spots. While D.J. Moore beat out Corey Graham for the starting nickelback spot.

What Major Wright has to hope for is Danieal Manning struggles, so he can come into the starting lineup. Wright reminds alot of Bears fans of former Bears safety Mike Brown because of how he hits.

If Manning struggles expect him to go back to be the starting nickelback like he was last year.

Here’s what Major Wright had to say about the situation:

“I’m ready to play, I’m full-go.”

Bears GM Jerry Angelo said the team plans to take it slow with the rookie.

If Major Wright comes into the lineup and shines and Manning can barely make it at nickelback expect for Manning to be traded or let go at the end of the season. No one really knows how good this defense can be, but the secondary play might be the most vital this season.

In other news, SI.com is not very high on the Bears. In Don Banks most recent article called NFL predictions for division winners in 2010 season, Banks predicts the first place team and last place team in every division.

Banks picks the Green Bay Packers to win the division with a 12-4 record and he picks the Bears to be the last place team with a 5-11 record.

Here’s what Banks had to say in that article on SI.com:

“Often a winless preseason translates not in the slightest to what a team will be come the regular season. But there was something entirely listless and directionless about the 0-4 Bears this summer, and I do believe that bodes for big trouble in Chicago. Lovie Smith‘s guys had better win their opener at home against Detroit, because with Dallas, Green Bay and the Giants waiting in Weeks 2-4, a snowball effect could ensue.”

My Thoughts:

The Bears didn’t want to show much in the preseason because they don’t want teams knowing what there going to do when the regular season starts.

Mr. Banks the preseason means absolutely nothing to teams, look at the Indianapolis Colts, who have always been a bad preseason team. Clearly the Colts are good regular season team.

The Bears schedule is what worries Bears fans and analysts the most. If you start the regular season hot you can usually keep that going for the rest of the season. So, for Banks to pick the Lions to finish ahead of the Bears in the NFC North standings because of schedule and preseason play is ludicrous.

The Lions and Bears schedules are almost identical and again the preseason has no meaning on the regular season.

News And Notes: Martz Talks About Greg Olsen, Omiyale Moving to RT, Bears To Wear Throwbacks

News and Notes: April 20, 2010

-Mike Martz spoke up again about another vital piece of the Bears offense TE Greg Olsen. He said if he can’t get Olsen to fit, there is something wrong with his offense.

Here’s what he said about Greg Olsen:

“If there’s a player that can’t fit a system, then something is wrong — if he’s a good player — with the system. Don’t you think? Our deal is, we will give everybody an opportunity to find who they are and how they will contribute. Everybody will get that opportunity, and Greg will, too. He’s learned things very quickly, very pleased with just the few things we’ve done on the field. Not disappointed in any respect.”

“He needs to get grounded in blocking, and he knows that, we’ve told him that, It’s hard to run the ball if you don’t have a tight end that’s going to handle the edge over there. We’ve got a number of tight ends because we anticipate running the ball very well when we want to run it.”

-Frank Omiyale is moving over to right tackle, his natural position.

Mike Martz had this to say about the move:

“I’m excited about that whole group, our two young tackles now, moving Frank out to right tackle, going to have Chris [Williams] at left tackle. To have two young tackles with their ability, and to develop them with somebody like [new Bears offensive line coach] Mike Tice is kind of remarkable.”

“The inside situation with Olin [Kreutz], we’ve got some young guards that we’ll choose from. We’ll let them kind of battle things out.”

-The Bears will wear a throwback uniform from the 1940s (pictured above) as part of a campaign honoring the “Monsters of the Midway” during select regular-season contests in 2010.

This season the Bears will wear their throwback uniforms during two games which have yet to be determined. Fans will get to see current players sporting the throwback uniforms at the Bears Expo this Saturday.
