Is Chad Ochocinco Heading To the Windy City This Off-Season?

Chad Ochocinco will likely play his last game in a New England Patriots uniform this Sunday at Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis.

Would he consider a move to Chicago, where he would team up with Jay Cutler and Matt Forte?

Ochocinco is scheduled to make $3.1 million next season, but the Patriots will probably void his contract unless he takes a big pay cut.

With that being said, he could come very cheap and could turn out to be a solid addition to any team in need of a veteran wide receiver.

In New England, he hasn’t gotten into the flow of the offense and has fallen behind Julian Edelman and Tiquan Underwood on the depth chart.

Ochocinco didn’t even suit up for the AFC Championship game against Baltimore.

In 15 games this season, he reeled in 15 passes for 276 yards and one touchdown.

Obviously those stats aren’t very good, but Ochocinco still has talent. He just needs to be put in the right situation.

At age 34, he could bring the knowledge and consistency the Bears have been lacking for a long time at the wide receiver position.

The Bears receiving core has Earl Bennett, Johnny Knox, Devin Hester and Dane Sanzenbacher under contract for next season. All of those players stand 6 feet tall or below.

Knox might not be ready for training camp due to a back injury he suffered against Seattle in Week 16 of the season.

Bears offensive coordinator Mike Tice has made it clear that the Bears have to add some size to the position. New general manager, Phil Emery has a liking to the taller receivers.

In Atlanta, Emery found a gem in Roddy White and in Kansas City, he drafted Dwayne Bowe and Jonathan Baldwin.

The Bears would like to find a gem like Roddy White or Dwayne Bowe at the 19th spot in the first round of the NFL Draft, but adding a veteran like Ochocinco might not be a bad idea.

Devin Hester struggled to stay healthy this season with an ankle problem and was better focusing on the return game. Bennett and Knox are solid when healthy, but the Bears don’t have anybody that scares defenses or even causes double teams.

6’3″ Michael Floyd, who enjoyed to straight 1000 yard seasons at Notre Dame would be a steal at the 19th pick. He has dealt with alcohol issues, including a DUI, but claims that he is past all of that nonsense.

Would the Bears be willing to take Floyd at 19, even with all of his troubled history?

Another option would be 6’3″ Marvin Jones from Cal. He isn’t in the same skill class as Justin Blackmon from Oklahoma State, who is a sure top 10 pick or even Michael Floyd from Notre Dame, but he is a solid receiver.

The Bears could wait to pick him in the second round, unless the receivers start to get drafted early on.

Jones enjoyed two straight seasons of 700 yards or more at Cal.

Adding a tall young promising receiver in the draft would be the first step to the Bears improving on offense.

But would adding Ochocinco to the mix help even more? He’s proven he isn’t a big distraction anymore and would likely benefit from a full off-season learning the playbook.

Lets say the Bears select Floyd at 19 and sign Ochocinco. The receiving core for 2012-2013 would look like this: Bennett, Floyd, Knox, Ochocinco, Hester, Sanzenbacher.

That would be an improvement over what the Bears had this past season, right?

The Bears might decide to spend more money on the position, which more fans would be pleased to see, but if they can get a solid #1 in the draft and Ochocinco on a discount then why not pull the trigger.

Don’t be surprised to see the Bears go this route because free agents like Vincent Jackson, Dwayne Bowe, and Pierre Garcon will be costly this off-season.

Remembering A Legend: Oakland Raiders Owner Al Davis Passes Away At 82

Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis passed away today at the age of 82. Davis was a part of the Raiders organization since 1963.

He spent time as the head coach from (1963-1965), then became the commissioner of the AFL in 1966.

He would become the part-owner and general manager of the Raiders the following year. He kept that title until the AFL and NFL merged together in 1970.

Once the merged happened, Davis was named the owner and general manager of the Raiders. He was the owner from 1970 until this year, 2011.

In his time in the NFL he saw the Raiders win three Super Bowls (XI, 1976, XV, 1980 and XVIII, 1983). He also saw the Raiders win five AFC Championships (1967, 1976, 1980, 1983 and 2002). The 1967 win came in the AFL.

Davis will always be remembered as a winner in the eyes of Oakland Raiders fans. Younger NFL fans may not know who he is, but they should now.

Davis will be remembered as a legend by NFL followers forever, he was a big part of the start of the NFL.

Condolences go out to the entire Oakland Raiders organization, NFL and of course the Davis family.

Expect to see a fired up Raiders squad this Sunday in Houston honoring the late Al Davis. The Raiders will find a way to honor him the right way, maybe with a win.

Bears head coach Lovie Smith had this to say about Al Davis:

“You have to be sad a little bit when we lose one of our icons, one of the titans, innovators, all of that in the NFL in Al Davis,” said Smith following practice at Halas Hall. “You think about him, you think about their offensively vertical passing game, deep balls. And, as a defensive guy … ‘man’ coverage, bump-and-run. So we definitely lost one of the guys that has a lot to do with us having an opportunity to play this game on Monday night.”

Odds That Plaxico Burress Lands With The Bears

After 21 long months in jail, WR Plaxico Burress is a free man.

The Super Bowl XLII MVP is now 34-years-old and is searching for a place to play when and if the lockout ends.

Plaxico seems pretty happy to be a free man, but he also seems focused on making a big return to the NFL as the biggest free agent at the wide receiver position this off-season.

Here are the odds that Plaxico Burress lands with teams who need a tall wide receiver, one being the Chicago Bears:

Philadelphia Eagles                      3/2
New York Jets                            3/1
St. Louis Rams                          11/2
Washington Redskins                15/2
Minnesota Vikings                     15/2
Pittsburgh Steelers                    10/1
Chicago Bears                           12/1
New York Giants                        12/1
Cleveland Browns                      15/1
Oakland Raiders                         15/1

Will Plaxico Burress be suspended at any point by his Team or the NFL during the 2011 Regular Season?

Yes                              1/1

2011 NFL Draft: Options For The Chicago Bears In Round Number Two And Three

The NFL Draft starts very soon, hopefully Bears fans all around the world will be tuning in. It will be interesting to see what happens for the Bears in the second and third rounds tonight.

The second round has started with cornerbacks (Ras-I Dowling (Patriots), Aaron Williams (Bills) and a QB, Andy Dalton (Bengals) being selected.

The Chicago Bears needs are, OG, DT, WR, LB, DE

With Dowling and Williams off the board the best remaining cornerbacks are Brandon Harris from Miami, Davon House from New Mexico State, Shareece Wright from USC and Marcus Gilchrist from Clemson.

-DT Marvin Austin will likely be off the board by the time the Bears pick at No. 62, so if they wanted him they would have to trade up.

-DT Jurrell Casey and Terrell McClain could be options at No. 62 in the second round or at No. 93 in the third round depending if they fall.

-CB Brandon Harris from Miami could fall to the Bears at No. 62, if he does he would be a solid contributor next season.

-WR Leonard Hankerson also from Miami has arguably the biggest hands in the draft. He is the big receiver standing at 6’2″ that the Bears desire.

-WR Jerrell Jernigan from Troy is called a solid route runner and he could possibly play slot in the Bears offense next season. I’m sure Mike Martz would love this kid.

-Trading could be an option, you never know what Jerry Angelo and Co. will do in the later rounds.

NFL Draft: Options For The Chicago Bears In Round Number One

Well QB Cam Newton went to the Carolina Panthers number one, no surprise there. LB Von Miller went to the Denver Broncos, Marcell Dareus to the Bills and A.J. Green went to the Bengals. It will be interesting to see what happens throughout the rest of the draft. The Bears could wind up with a good player at the end of the first round.

Here are some options for the Bears at #29:

-OT Gabe Carimi would be a beast on the line for the Bears, but the Bears would be lucky if he fell to them because he has been rising on draft boards.

-OT Derek Sherrod is probably the most likely offensive tackle to be available at the Bears spot.

-DT Marvin Austin from North Carolina would be a surprise pick considering the Bears need an offensive tackle more than anything, considering the Bears offensive line gave up a league high 56 sacks. Picking Austin would be settling in my mind because offensive line is a bigger need for the Bears, but I wouldn’t mind him.

-DT Phil Taylor from Baylor could be an option considering he would likely be available. The big defensive tackle would be a solid fit in Lovie Smith’s defense.

-DT Muhammad Wilkerson would be a solid pick as well, but he might be a little bit of a reach.

-WR Jonathan Baldwin. The real question is, would the Bears draft a wide receiver in the first round? I don’t think so, but Baldwin would be solid in the Bears offense. Baldwin has the size (6’4″) and speed to be a starting wide receiver in the NFL.

-Trading down could be an option if no players at #29 have a first-round grade. If the top five tackles are gone and the Bears don’t feel happy with the spot there don’t be surprised if they move down.

Report: Judge Nelson Lifts The Lockout

According to a report out of St. Paul, Minnesota the NFL lockout has been lifted.

Here’s what the Associated Press had to say about the matter:

“A federal judge on Monday ordered an end to the NFL lockout, giving the players an early victory in their fight with the owners over how to divide the $9 billion business.

U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson said she was swayed by the players’ argument that that the lockout, now in its second month, was causing irreparable harm to their careers.

The plaintiffs “have made a strong showing that allowing the League to continue their ‘lockout’ is presently inflicting, and will continue to inflict, irreparable harm upon them, particularly when weighed against the lack of any real injury that would be imposed on the NFL by issuing the preliminary injunction,” Nelson wrote.

The NFL promised an immediate appeal.

“We will promptly seek a stay from Judge Nelson pending an expedited appeal to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals,” the league said. “We believe that federal law bars injunctions in labor disputes. We are confident that the Eighth Circuit will agree. But we also believe that this dispute will inevitably end with a collective bargaining agreement, which would be in the best interests of players, clubs and fans. We can reach a fair agreement only if we continue negotiations toward that goal.

Here’s what Yahoo Sports had to say about the matter:

“Nelson heard arguments on the injunction at a hearing on April 6 and ordered the two sides to resume mediation while she was considering her decision. The owners and players, who failed to reach consensus after 16 days of mediated talks earlier this year, met over four days with a federal magistrate but did not announce any progress on solving the NFL’s first work stoppage since 1987.

If her ruling stands, it is still unclear exactly what happens next. The collective bargaining agreement has expired, so how the league would handle free agency, trades and offseason workouts at team headquarters, all of which were banned under the lockout, remains to be seen.”

Report: Ruling From Judge Nelson Likely Coming On Monday

According to Gary Myers of the New York Daily News, the ruling from Judge Susan Nelson on the pending motion to lift the lockout will likely come on Monday. Monday happens to be three days before the NFL Draft.

“The players are the heavy favorites to win this round,” Gary Myers said about the possible lifting of the lockout on Monday.

Gregg Rosenthal of Profootballtalk.com had this to say about the possible lifting of the lockout:

“A ruling in favor of the players wouldn’t simply re-open the NFL for business again.  A stay on the ruling is expected pending appeal, which will take another indefinite amount of time to settle.”

More news on the lockout is expected this weekend. In the meantime you can read what former NFL wide receiver Amani Toomer had to say about NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Let me just tell you, it wasn’t nice.

Could WR Mike Sims-Walker Be Heading To The Bears?

Could free-agent wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker be playing in the Windy City in 2011?

Would he be a good fit in Mike Martz’s offensive system? Let’s first take a look at what the Bears currently have at the wide receiver position.

The Bears currently only have four wide receivers on their roster—Johnny KnoxDevin HesterEarl Bennett and Andy Fantuz. Knox, Hester and Bennett all will contribute on offense, but 6’4″ Andy Fantuz is no guarantee to make the roster. Fantuz was very successful in the CFL, but success doesn’t always transfer over to the NFLplus he isn’t known for being the field-stretching type.

Free-agent receivers in the Bears system, Rashied Davis and Devin Aromashodu, will be looked over. Aromashodu, a restricted free agent, just simply didn’t show up last season, so the Bears didn’t tender him, and he will be free to sign with any team.

Davis, on the other hand, is a 31-year-old receiver who is a solid contributor on special teams. When he gets chances at playing wide receiver, he usually shines. In the Week 17 finale against Green Bay, Davis reeled in seven passes for 63 yards.

So, with the Bears potentially having Knox, Hester, Bennett and Davis under contract for the 2011 season, would adding Sims-Walker to the mix be a good idea?

Consider this: Knox reeled in 51 passes for 960 yards and five touchdowns, while Hester and Bennett combined for 86 catches for 1,036 yards and seven touchdowns. Would Sims-Walker actually be able to change this offense?

“Most of our guys [such as] Johnny [Knox] — Earl [Bennett is] a little bigger — they are smaller receivers,” Bears coach Lovie Smith said. “So to just add a little bit different flavor [in terms of size] wouldn’t be a bad idea. As much as anything, though, we’re just trying to add a guy that can play ball. We’re going to try to improve the receiving corps just like all our positions. We’re going to always look to improve, but we have a solid core in place right now.”

Knox and Bennett are the likely starters with Hester again focusing on punt returns, but would the 6’2″ Sims-Walker actually improve from last season, with Knox and Bennett on the field?

A former third-round pick from the University of Central Florida, Sims-Walker has spent the last three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars where he experienced some success. In those three seasons, Sims-Walker played in 38 games, making 122 catches for 1,648 yards and 14 touchdowns. Last season, Sims-Walker made only 43 catches 562 yards and seven touchdowns, a significant drop-off from his 2009 campaign.

Jacksonville let Sims-Walker go when the season was over after he failed to win the number one wide receiver position. Analysts say the Bears need a true number one receiver, but I don’t think they’ll find one in the draft. They could find him in free agency, but it could be costly, that’s why Sims-Walker could be a good fit. Sims-Walker is a good fit and a cheap option, who would fit nicely in Mike Martz’s offense.

Sims-Walker could be the pickup the Bears need. He is a nice deep threat, who when healthy can put up nice numbers—just look at his 2009 season (63 receptions, 869 yards, seven touchdowns).

Sims-Walker would be a cheaper option with a lot of upside and would give the Bears a big deep threat who could stretch the field. If the Bears look for a wide receiver, free agency would be a better spot, since most of the wide receivers in this year’s draft class this year likely won’t contribute right away.

What would you think if the Bears added Mike Sims-Walker to their receiving core?

The NFL Lockout Is A Shame To All Football Fans

The NFL lockout is a joke. For the league to be locked out after arguably having the best season in revenue. April 6th a hearing between the players and the NFL will be held in federal court. That will likely be an important event for the NFL to figure out.

The NFL and it’s players has six months until the season starts to solve all of this. It is complete bogus that the NFL has gotten to this point. No one really thought it was possible, but now that it has happened fans and players are definitely disappointed.

The NFLPA has warned the incoming players to boycott the draft. That could start up a riot.

Either way the league needs to figure everything out with the CBA and the labor deal because no NFL means a bad end to the 2011 year. Without no NFL for 2011-2012, I would miss out on so much in the world of football and I know every other football fan out there would as well. Lets all hope for an NFL season in 2011-2012.
