Pro Football Talk: #16 (Last week: 21)

Analysis,Beat the Packers, and the Bears will move to the top 10.  Maybe the top five.”

CBS Sports: #8 (Last week: #20)

Analysis, “The Bears get their chance to really make a statement if they can beat the Packers. It’s a prime-time chance for Cutler to shut up even more critics.”

Fan House: #9 (Last week: 21)

Analysis, “Jay Cutler carved up the Dallas defense Sunday and looks more than comfortable in the Mike Martz offense. The offensive line deserves credit, too, because it was able to keep Cutler upright more effectively as the game wore on. No question the Bears can be very dangerous if they continue to play like this.”

USA Today: #11 (Last week: #20)

SI.com: #13 (Last week: #25)

Analysis, “Hail, hail the 2-0 Bears! It took a horrendous NFL rule and an imploding Cowboys team to help get Chicago to 2-0, but the Bears deserve credit for playing tough and smart in Dallas. And let’s all salute Jay Cutler for persevering through all kinds of heat from the Cowboys pass rush to post a second consecutive impressive showing. But Monday night’s home game against Green Bay should tell us if the Bears intend to stick around all season in the NFC North race.”

Fox Sports: #9 (Last week: #19)

Analysis, “The Martz-Cutler marriage is off to a good start. Martz is managing Cutler well with three-step drops. The strong-armed passer will face another 3-4 defense on Monday night against the Packers.”

Week Two NFL Power Rankings, Chicago Bears Edition

Here are the Week two Bears power rankings from various sites around the web:

ESPN: #22 (Last week: 21)

Analysis, “Catch or no catch, the Bears got a much-needed division win over Detroit.”

Pro Football Weekly: #20 (Last week: #18)

Analysis, “Loss to Lions would have hurt more than damning Forbes article.

NFL.com: #22 (Last week: #27)

USAToday.com: #20 (Last week: #21)

Yahoo Sports: #17 (Last week: 22)

Analysis, “Hey, all you Jay Cutler(notes) body-language experts – did you notice him walking off dispassionately after his game-winning touchdown pass to Matt Forte(notes)? If so, why do I get the feeling you didn’t find it particularly bothersome?”

CBS Sports: #20 (Last week: 22)

Analysis,They didn’t hold onto to the ball that well against the Lions, which has to be a concern. But Jay Cutler looked sharp in that opener, throwing for 372 yards and two touchdowns. That has to carry on.”

SI.com: #25 (Last week: 29)

Analysis, “The good news is that Matt Forte has his mojo back and Jay Cutler threw for 372 yards and a couple touchdowns in his first real game in Mike Martz‘s offense. But the bad news is Chicago needed that horrible Calvin Johnson call in the final half-minute to avoid getting beat by the Lions with their backup quarterback (Shaun Hill) playing the second half.”

Fox Sports: #19 (Last week: 20)

Analysis, “As good as Jay Cutler’s stats were last week against the Lions, a lot of his passing yardage came on screen passes. I’m not sold out the Cutler-Mike Martz combination just yet. They’ll get a much better challenge this week in Dallas.”

Week One NFL Power Rankings, Chicago Bears Edition

Here are the Week one Bears power rankings from various sites around the web:

ESPN: #21 (Last year: #23)

Analysis, I’m not buying the Mike Martz-Jay Cutler marriage so far. Are you?

Pro Football Weekly: #18 (Last year: #23)

Analysis, Serious concerns about development of the offense.

NFL.com: #27 (Last year: #23)

Analysis, Jay Cutler will be much better, but will the running game and offensive line improve too? It also hurts to have defensive uncertainties in this division.

CBS Sports: #22 (Last year: 24)

Analysis, Jay Cutler will be under a ton of scrutiny. Can he handle it? Can he co-exist with Mike Martz? Or will this be a disaster and the end of Lovie Smith?

Fox Sports: #21 (Last year: #23)

Analysis, With Peppers hopefully sufficiently motivated, Brian Urlacher healthy and Jay Cutler trying to do his Kurt Warner impression under Mike Martz, the Bears are hoping for a big playoff push in 2010. The biggest key may be RB Matt Forte getting help with Chester Taylor signed to give him a hand in carrying the ball.

Week 17 Power Rankings, Bears Edition

Vikings Bears FootballHere are the Week 17 Bears power rankings from various sites around the web:

Yahoo Sports: #22 (Last week: 24)

Analysis, When Jay Cutler plays like he did Monday night, is there any question as to why this franchise gave up so much to get him?

ESPN: #23 (Last week: 25)

Analysis, They came up big Monday night. Too bad that hasn’t happened more often this season.

Pro Football Weekly: #23 (Last week: 26)

Analysis, Could Lovie’s job hang on Week 17 result vs. Lions?

CBS Sports: #24 (Last week: 27)

Analysis, What they saw from Jay Cutler on Monday night is what they expected this season. He looked comfortable for a change.

Fox Sports: #23 (Last week: 25)

Analysis, Some have questioned his reputation as being diva-esque. His body language, hair style and social habits have been questioned. But 26 interceptions or not, as a fellow human being it was nice to see Jay Cutler’s 2009 train wreck of a season get some relief with that Monday night thriller against the Vikings.

Week 16 Power Rankings, Bears Edition

Bears Ravens FootballHere are the Week 16 Bears power rankings from various sites around the web:

Fox Sports: #25 (Last week: 24)

Analysis, Another loss, three more picks for Jay Cutler and plenty of bad vibes in the Windy City. This season’s biggest NFL letdown team is the Bears, and player is Cutler — who is just the third NFL quarterback in the last 30 years to throw at least 25 interceptions in a season (Vinny Testaverde: 25 in 2000, Brett Favre: 29 in 2005).

Pro Football Weekly: #26 (Last week: #23)

Analysis, Jeremy Bates, Mike Martz … fans will take anyone at this point.

ESPN: #25 (Last week: 23)

Analysis, What’s left to say about the Bears?

CBS Sports: #27 (Last week: 25)

Analysis, Jerry Angelo said no decision has been made about Lovie Smith. Has it been made about Angelo?

Yahoo Sports: #24 (Last week: #23)

Analysis, This can’t be good news for Lovie Smith, can it (and, while we’re on the subject … can we be sure that Jerry Angelo’s fate has been decided).

Week 15 Power Rankings, Bears Edition

Packers Bears FootballHere are the Week 15 Bears power rankings from various sites around the web:

ESPN: #23 (Last week: 24)

Analysis, Even if coach Lovie Smith isn’t in trouble, offensive coordinator Ron Turner definitely is.

Yahoo Sports: #23 (Last week: 24)

CBS Sports: #25 (Last week: 25)

Analysis, They’re officially eliminated from playoff contention, which will bring even more scrutiny on Jay Cutler. Is Lovie Smith safe?

Pro Football Weekly: #24 (Last week: 23)

Analysis, Right when you think Jay Cutler will have a good game ..

Packers’ Raji Takes A Shot At Olin Kreutz

800px-Olin_KreutzOlin Kreutz, an 11 year veteran has been voted to six pro bowls, played in 170 games and has blocked for about I don’t know how many quarterbacks. A lot! Anyway he is not having the greatest season so far, but you can’t put all the blame on just him. Packers rookie DT B.J. Raji who was a first round pick out of Boston College didn’t play in the season opening game in Green Bay, but he had lots to say about Bears center Olin Kreutz.

Here’s what he said:

“It’s nothing physical, it’s all technical, I’m stronger than the guy. I mean, that’s not really talking (smack), he’s just fast. That’s not his game, really, strength. He’s more trying to out leverage you, get around you. Once I get the feel of that then the game will come a lot easier.

“It’s not going to take me a whole lot to get used to him moving. Football’s football. He’s not going to change the way he plays because there’s a new nose on him. He’s going to play the way he’s been playing. So what I watch on film, it’s probably going to help me out the most, really.”

I hope Kreutz does something to shut this rookie punk up. I know the 32 year old Olin Kreutz might not have much left in him, but you still have to have some respect for a guy, who has been one of the best centers for arguably the last decade. Kreutz will show him what blocking is about on Sunday, Raji is an overrated cocky guy anyways.

Week 14 Power Rankings, Bears Edition

Yahoo Sports: #24 (Last week: 23)

Analysis, “If the Bears try to trade Lance Briggs during the offseason, will Sunday’s performance by Jamar Williams be the impetus?”

ESPN: #24 (Last week: 23)

Analysis, “The best news in an ugly victory over St. Louis: Jay Cutler didn’t throw an interception.”

CBS Sports: #25 (Last week: 25)

Analysis, “It’s too bad they can’t play the Rams every Sunday. The heat might not be as intense on Jay Cutler and Lovie Smith.”

Pro Football Weekly: #23 (Last week: 22)

Analysis, “Another wholly uninspiring game, though Jamar Williams was great.”

Fox Sports: #24 (Last week: 23)

Analysis, “Big deal, right? So they beat the Rams. But what’s up with Jay Cutler? The gunner is averaging just 153.3 passing yards over the last three games. Hmm, it seems all the talk about throwing all those picks is also getting in his grill.”

Warren Sapp Tells Brian Urlacher to “Shut Up”

nfl_g_sapp_580Retired defensive tackle Warren Sapp, who is currently on NFL Network and Inside the NFL appeared on the Mully & Hanley Show on WSCR-670 AM in Chicago yesterday. He was very critical of Brian Urlacher’s comments.

Here’s what he had to say:

“Shut up, he’s not helping. Why don’t he go and help those linebackers watch tape and teach them how to call a defense and line them up. That way they aren’t all off flank all game long against Cincinnati and Cedric Benson is running for 189 yards.”

My Thoughts:

I think Brian Urlacher is right on the money with what he has said, but those things shouldn’t be said publicly, especially when you haven’t been playing up to your expectations over the last couple of seasons. I agree with what he has said and I really believe he would have had a huge season this year if he had stayed healthy. The reason for the defense being so bad on stopping offenses on third downs is because of Urlacher’s absence. Without Urlacher’s help in the middle of the field quarterbacks and running backs can pick apart this defense. Hunter Hillenmeyer is an average player at best, but he is nothing like Brian Urlacher.

I think next season if Urlacher comes back healthy and can stay healthy this defense will be much improved. A trio of Briggs, Urlacher and June doesn’t sound bad to me.
