ESPN:

#10 (Last week: 12)

Analysis,Red zone problems killed them in a loss to Atlanta.”

CBS:

#11 (Last week: 9)

Analysis, “The biggest issue is their lack of a running game. What has happened? Matt Forte has been a fantasy football disaster, if that type of thing matters to you.”

Yahoo Sports:

#15 (Last week: 13)

Analysis, “Have any of the people who are all excited about the acquisition of Gaines Adams spent much time watching him play over the past two-plus seasons?”

Pro Football Weekly:

#11 (Last week: 13)

Analysis,“Nice timing with the false-start penalty, Orlando Pace.”

Fox Sports:

#14 (Last week: 13)

Analysis, “Despite his 0-2 record in Sunday night games so far, Jay Cutler’s Bears have faced the early-season schedule admirably with a couple solid wins over the Steelers and Seahawks.”

Covers.com:

#13 (Last week: 9)

Analysis, “The Bears continued their trend of outgaining opponents and losing, and getting outgained and winning. The offensive line is a major concern especially with the running game faltering.”

SI.com:

#11 (Last week: 9)

Analysis, “The Bears may want to induce me to stay away from their games this season. I’ve seen Chicago twice so far, and both times it lost a Sunday-nighter on the road with me on the premises. In those defeats, Week 1 at Green Bay and last Sunday in Atlanta, quarterback Jay Cutler tossed six of the seven interceptions he has this year. In Chicago’s other three games, its 3-0 and Cutler has been near flawless. I’m open to reason on this issue if Lovie Smith would like to talk.”

Week Six Power Rankings, Bears Edition

Here are the week sixPhiladelphia+Eagles+v+Chicago+Bears+82iM-J7njRDl Bears power rankings from various sites around the web:

ESPN:

#12 (Last Week: 14)

Analysis, “A 3-1 record, much of it produced without injured linebacker Brian Urlacher, is pretty impressive.”

CBS:

#9 (Last Week: 12)

Analysis, “Coming off their bye, they face a good Atlanta team on the road. Jay Cutler will have to continue to play like he has the past three games.”

Yahoo Sports:

#13 (Last Week: 14)

Analysis, “Is Greg Olsen going to bust out and become a legitimate downfield threat, or was that just a bunch of preseason hype?”

Pro Football Weekly:

#13 (Last Week: 11)

Analysis, “Not the ideal time for a bye, but they’ll take the rest.”

Fox Sports:

#13 (Last Week: 14)

Analysis, “No Brian Urlacher, no problem for Chicago’s defense, which ranks sixth in the NFL in points allowed/game. Plus, Jay Cutler has this team dreaming big. Is the running game that struggled for three weeks really back after Matt Forte ripped through the lowly Lions? Hard to say at this point.”

SI.com:

#9 (Last Week: 12)

Analysis, “I’m going to see the Bears at Falcons Sunday night in Atlanta and I’m expecting a far different Jay Culter than the one I watched throw four interceptions at Green Bay in the Week 1 Sunday nigther. Cutler has thrown only one interception in the three games since the loss to the Packers, and if he wants to keep up with the Kyle Ortons of the world, he’ll keep right on protecting the ol’ pumpkin this month.”

Covers.com:

#9 (Last Week: 11)

Analysis, “The Bears had the week off following three straight wins to keep pace with the Vikings. Back-to-back road games are up next against the 7-2 combined Falcons and Bengals.”

Week Five Power Rankings, Bears Edition

88971967JD021_DETROIT_LIONSHere are the week five Bears power rankings from various sites around the web:

ESPN:

#14 (Last week: 14)

Analysis,  “Against the Lions, Matt Forte finally regained his rhythm.”

CBS:

#12 (Last week: 16)

Analysis, “Jay Cutler has had three consecutive games with a rating over 100. Still doubt him? The defense does have some problems that need to be worked out.”

Yahoo Sports:

#14 (Last week: 14)

Analysis, “Has any team ever had more players who are ridiculously dangerous on kick and punt returns?”

Pro Football Weekly:

#11 (Last week: 13)

Analysis, “Johnny Knox is a baller in name and game.”

Fox Sports:

#14 (Last week: 16)

Analysis, “There are a few stunners. First, Chicago’s defense has hung in there just fine without injured LB Brian Urlacher — forcing two turnovers/game in three straight wins minus their defensive captain.”

SI.com:

#12 (Last week: 16)

Analysis, “Talk about your win-win trades. The Broncos are 4-0 with the efficient Kyle Orton at quarterback, and the Bears are 3-1 with a three-game winning streak from the newly disciplined and patient Jay Cutler. Can’t say we saw either one of those particular scenarios playing out in the season’s first month.”

Covers.com:

#11 (Last week: 11)

Analysis, “The Bears toyed with Detroit before pulling away despite getting outgained 398-276. After averaging 2.8 yards per carry in their first three games, the Bears ran for 7.6 ypc against the Lions.”

Did You Know? 10-5-09

91421700Bears quarterback Jay Cutler became the first Bears quarterback since Jack Concannon in 1970 to have a 100-plus passer rating in three straight games.

Oddly enough in 1967 the Bears traded Mike Ditka to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Concannon. Concannon spent five seasons with the Bears (1967-1971), where he threw for over 5,000 yards, 31 touchdowns and 52 interceptions. His passer rating in those five years was 55.6.

Concannon’s best season with the Bears was in 1970, when he threw for 2130 yards, 16 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

Hopefully Jay Cutler doesn’t put up stats like that, but it’s sure nice to see him breaking records already. If you didn’t know Cutler has thrown seven touchdowns and one interception since the four pick embarrassment in Green Bay.

Week Four Power Rankings, Bears Edition

88971958OG004Here are the week four Bears power rankings from various sites around the web:

ESPN:

#14 (No change from last week)

Analysis, “It’s now hard to remember how lousy Jay Cutler played in Week 1.”

CBS:

#16 (+3 from last week)

Analysis, “The past two weeks we saw why they traded to get Jay Cutler. The kid can play, even if some, like my colleague Clark Judge, don’t think he can.”

Yahoo Sports:

#14 ( No change from last week)

Analysis, “When coach Lovie Smith assured us Devin Hester was a legitimate No. 1 receiver, is it possible he was right?”

Pro Football Weekly:

#13 (+5 from last week)

Analysis, “Hester and Knox have corners stretching hamstrings extra long.”

Fox Sports:

#16 (+1 from last week)

Analysis, “Who’d have thunk it, the Bears being 0-1 in games started by Brian Urlacher and 2-0 without their defensive leader? Thank new shiny ride Jay Cutler, who has more than made up for yakking all over the season opener by leading the Bears to two straight fourth-quarter comeback wins against tough teams Pittsburgh and Seattle.”

SI.com:

#16 (+1 from last week)

Analysis, “We’ve knocked Jay Cutler when he gets sloppy with the ball, so honesty compels us to highlight just how efficient he has been in leading the Bears to consecutive wins over the Steelers and Seahawks. He completed 73.8 percent of his passes in those games (48 of 65) for 483 yards, with five touchdowns and just one interception. Even better, he’s not forcing throws downfield, but seems content to take the short stuff underneath and wait for his shots at big plays. That’s winning football, and if it keeps up, Cutler is going to change a lot of minds.”

Covers.com:

#11 (+7 from last week)

Analysis, “The Bears won against a short-handed Seattle team and now face the Lions who may still be celebrating into the week. Chicago has a bye next week before two straight roadies.”

Week Three Power Rankings, Bears Edition

88971934JD024_PITTSBURGH_STHere are the week three Bears power rankings from various sites around the web:

ESPN:

#14 (+1 from last week)

Analysis, “The Bears need more of the Jay Cutler who showed up to beat the Steelers.”

CBS:

#19 (+1 from last week)

Analysis, “So Jay Cutler isn’t that bad after all. He played well in beating the Steelers to hush some critics. The better news is the improved play of the defense — even without Brian Urlacher.”

Yahoo Sports:

#14 (+2 from last week)

Analysis, “How many of you fans fetched your crumpled up Jay Cutler jerseys out of the trash after Sunday’s performance against the Steelers?”

Pro Football Weekly:

#13 (+1 from last week)

Analysis, “Huge win. No, HUGE win.”

Fox Sports:

#17 (+3 from last week)

Analysis, “Now that’s why Bears fans went B-A-N-A-N-A-S, bananas all summer long in anticipation of watching Jay Cutler captain their team. Cutler came through in Week 2 to avoid an 0-2 start with a flawless fourth quarter in the rain against the defending champion Steelers.”

Covers.com:

#18 (-6 from last week)

Analysis, “The Bears got some revenge after last week’s meltdown in GB. They were outgained but won thanks to the 2-0 turnover edge and two Pitt missed field goals.”

SI.com:

#17 (no change from last week)

Analysis, “That was a big, equilibrium-gathering win against the Steelers, but can a franchise that barely survived the Good Rex, Bad Rex era endure a similar Good Cutler, Bad Cutler routine from week to week? In case you’re wondering, the Bears beat the defending champs and didn’t move an inch because we’re not jumping them over the Packers, who just beat them in Week 1.”

Week Two Power Rankings, Bears Edition

49246175Here are the week two Bears power rankings from various sites around the web:

ESPN:

#15 ( -4 from last week)

Analysis, “The loss to Green Bay was tough. The loss of Brian Urlacher for the season was devastating.” (Chadiha)

CBS:

#20 ( -5 from last week)

Analysis, “It was a bad start for Jay Cutler, and now he gets the Pittsburgh Steelers coming to town. Losing Brian Urlacher hurts.”

Yahoo Sports:

#16 ( -3 from last week)

Analysis, If Johnny Knox keeps burning defenders, how long until some smartass in an opposing secondary calls him a “Jackass”?

Pro Football Weekly:

#14 (no change from last week)

Analysis, “That’s not going to help Cutler’s clout in Chi-town.”

Fox Sports:

#20 ( -1 from last week)

Analysis, “Did you hear MJ just got inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame? The best NBA player ever won SIX rings with the Bulls, that’s pretty cool. Seriously, Chicago’s D seemed revived in the opener with four sacks and held the high-powered Packers until a late bomb on a tricky play-call.”

Covers.com:

#12 ( +7 from last week)

Analysis,“The Bears took one of the biggest jumps despite falling to the Packers and losing Brian Urlacher for the season. They outgained Green Bay 352-226.”

SI.com:

#17 ( -7 from last week)

Analysis, “What a difference a week makes in Bears-land. Jay Cutler morphs into Rex Grossman, and Brian Urlacher is lost for the year before it really begins. And now the home opener against the defending champ Steelers looms. Let’s see what Lovie Smith‘s guys have in their guts. If they’re going to hang with the Packers and Vikings this season, avoiding an 0-2 start looks mandatory.”

Depth Chart Battles: Tight Ends

Packers Bears FootballThe Bears have always had very good tight ends, but this year they are stacked at the position.

Of course Jay Cutlers favorite weapon Greg Olsen will be the starter and veteran Dez Clark will be used a lot as the number two.

Second year pro Kellen Davis looks to be the projected third string quarterback. The Bears veteran blocking tight end Michael Gaines in free agency this off-season.

Will the Bears keep four tight ends? Probably.

Why do I say this? Well Greg Olsen lines up as a wide receiver more than he does a tight end and Michael Gaines has been used at full back during the pre-season.

Greg Olsen is entering his third season with the Bears and he has slowly been getting better by the season. This year he has high expectations because of his new quarterback under center.

Dez Clark is Dez Clark, a solid 11 year veteran, who still has lots of juice left in him. Look for him to provide some nice goal line catches.

Kellen Davis is a 6-7 kid, who played both tight end and defensive end in college. Look for him to fill the role of John Gilmore of two years ago, which was goal line situations and lots of blocking situations.

Michael Gaines is a veteran, who can be a fullback or tight end because of his blocking skills. Look for him to be used sparingly throughout the season.

Overall the Bears have very good tight ends and Jay Cutler will definitely give all these guys some good looks this season.

I give the Bears tight ends an A grade.

Bears Player Preview: Josh Bullocks

joshbullocks_102507

Josh Bullocks signed with the Bears this off-season to compete at the free safety spot, but now since they moved Corey Graham to free safety, Bullocks will compete at the strong safety position.

When the Bears signed Bullocks this is what one New Orleans Saints fan had to say about it:

“I hope Bears fans don’t have any expectations for Bullocks to start (they likely do). As a Saints season ticker holder, I can almost guarantee the Saints have the worst starting safeties in the league… and Bullocks COULDNT EVEN START FOR US. He’s late to reads, miss-times jumps, has terrible hands, doesn’t tackle well and he’s slow. Other than that, he’s a fine player…Goodluck.”

Although he started 51 games in four years, including the playoffs, his best season was his rookie year (2nd round pick) in 2005 and after that he fell off.

He only started six games last season, after starting every game  in his first three seasons.

If he was bad with the one of the worst pass defenses in the Saints, why will he be better with the Bears?

I sure hope he is a backup at best for this secondary.

Bullocks has started games, making tackles, seven interceptions and three forced fumbles.

Corey Graham looks like the starter at free safety this season.

Welcome To The Windy City Pisa Tinoisamoa

1

The Bears signed free agent linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa to a one year deal on Friday.

Tinoisamoa worked with both Lovie Smith and Bob Babich in his first couple of seasons with the St. Louis Rams.

Tinoisamoa had a monster season last year, recording a career high 104 tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles.

The Rams released Tinoisamoa because of his size, his contract, and his new coach Steve Spagnolo.

If Tinoisamoa wins the job at strong side linebacker for the Bears not only will they have the best linebacker corps in the NFL, but Hunter Hillenmeyer could be on his way out of town.

The Bears are expected to keep six or seven linebackers on the 53-man roster.

So with the projected starters being Lance Briggs, Brian Urlacher, and Pisa Tinoisamoa, that’s three already.

So, backups Jamar Williams, Marcus Freeman, Joey LaRocque, Nick Roach and Hunter Hillenmeyer will all be competing for a spot on the team.

One or two of the backups above could be released.

Jamar Williams and Nick Roach are locks to make the roster.

The Bears are very high on Marcus Freeman, so I don’t think he’ll be dumped.

Joey LaRocque was a seventh round pick last season, but a very solid special teams contributor.

Hunter Hillenmeyer was hurt for most of the season and when he came back he was used on special teams.

I know I’d rather have Hillenmeyer on the team over a seventh round pick, who has six career tackles.

But Hillenmeyer could be released because of his contract and his durability.

Who knows?

All I know is the Bears added a good player in Pisa Tinoisamoa.
