Speak Up: Brian Urlacher Thinks The Bears Are The Best

The Bears have won five straight and Brian Urlacher is very passionate about his team’s play. Here is what he had to say the other day about the Bears:

“Remember, we have them at home … the same like Philly,” Urlacher told Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune. “When we played Philly, everybody was saying they were the best, right? It’s the same situation, and hopefully the same result.

“New England is the best team in the NFL, record-wise. But I feel like we’re the best team, period. That’s why I say record-wise. They have the best quarterback, numbers-wise. And everybody likes to go by numbers, right?”

“Right now, (Brady) is playing better than anybody,” Urlacher said. “There’s no doubt about that. Comparing with Peyton Manning, they’re just different. Well, maybe they’re not different because both run their offenses. Whatever they want to do, they do it. But Brady’s doing it better right now.

“He doesn’t make any mistakes with the football. You’re not going to trick him. You just better stick to your roles.”

Speak Up: Lance Briggs Talks About Nate Burelson’s “Guarantee”

Bears LB Lance Briggs talked about Sunday’s game against the Lions today. He talked about what Lions WR Nate Burelson said yesterday about guaranteeing a Lions win.

Here is what Briggs said:

“It should fire them up,” Briggs said. “I know it definitely fires us up. We’ve got it pinned up everywhere in our meeting rooms.”

A reporter noted to Briggs that the Bears had won 18 straight against the Lions and wondered if it would be safe to guarantee a win.

“Everybody is calling this a trap game,” Briggs said. “That’s a trap question right there.”

Here is what Lions WR Nate Burelson said earlier this week about Sunday’s game:

“Yeah, I said we will win on Sunday,” Burleson said. “We only got five games left, and my goal is to finish the season 7-9. Like I’ve been saying all year, we don’t have a team on the schedule that we can’t beat.”

MLB Brian Urlacher had this to say about the Lions game:

“I think we’re going to win,” he said, “but I’m not going to guarantee it.”

“Yeah, I know what he’s saying,” Urlacher said of Burleson’s comment. “You fully expect to win every game. If you don’t believe that, why are you playing or why are you getting ready to play?

“I’m not sure you go out and say that, but I think we all believe that.”

Speak Up: The Bears Defense Talks About Eagles QB Michael Vick

Bears defenders and coaches spoke up about Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick. Here’s what they had to say:

Brian Urlacher: “I’m not amazed with anything he’s doing. He’s Michael Vick, he was doing that before. I think it’s just now, he’s back in full shape and fully healthy. He’s an elite athlete.”

””He’s a quarterback now, when he was with Atlanta, they said he was a dangerous runner. Now he’s throwing the ball. He runs because he has to, not because he wants to.

“He’s sitting back there waiting for his guys to get open, then taking off. He’s got a cannon. We’ve all seen his arm. Just phenomenal.”

DE Julius Peppers: “It’s not hard to see what he’s doing. He’s the MVP, in my opinion, it will be a good challenge for us.

Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli: “How do you defend him? You have to stay on your feet, especially with our rushers, you have to contain this guy. But at the same time, you have to go after him. You have to really go out and compete because he’s a great one and has become an accomplished passer. He never lets a play die.”

LB Lance Briggs: “We have to play our game, Michael Vick looks like the phenomenal player that I always thought him to be. But it’s not about what Michael Vick does. It’s about what we do.”

Bettis: Bears Will Fall Apart And Packers Will Win The NFC North

Former Steelers running back and now SI.com writer Jerome Bettis had some harsh things to say about the Chicago Bears chances for the rest of the reason.

Here are the current NFC North standings:

Bears (6-3)
Packers (6-3)
Vikings (3-6)
Lions (2-7)

This is what Bettis had to say about the Bears chances:

“The Bears are bound to fall apart as the season draws to a close. Jay Cutler takes too many gambles and, as a result, makes too many mistakes. That will leave the Packers as the only team standing. Their offense has been outstanding, and I’ve been thoroughly impressed by Charles Woodson. Once again, he’s been a shut-down, game-changing player with his ability to create turnovers. Clay Matthews has earned plenty of praise, but Woodson is the key to that defense.”

Speak Up: Analyst Rodney Harrison and Jamie Dukes Discuss Jay Cutler and The Bears

NBC analyst Rodney Harrison spoke up about Jay Cutler’s struggles, here’s what he had to say:

“His mindset shouldn’t be on ‘Well, this is what I should have done or this is what I could do if I played him again, the fact is you absolutely killed your team. You’ve been killing your team the entire year by making [errant] passes over and over again, so show some maturity, grow up … just put it on your back and show some leadership. Show some maturity and say, ‘I can’t turn the ball over.’ …

“But this is still Jay Cutler. That’s why they got rid of him in Denver, a guy that hides behind his cockiness, his arrogance, and that’s why he continues to play like this. The guy has all the talent in the world, but until he matures and grows up, he’s going to continue to make these stupid mistakes.”

NFL Network’s analyst Jamie Dukes spoke up about Jay Cutler’s struggles and the struggles of the Bears, here’s what he had to say:

“Just like Philip Rivers, and this isn’t derogatory toward Rivers, you get a reputation for being smarmy and aloof but that’s OK. I don’t need him to be my best friend. But you have to at least give him a chance and all that personal baggage outweighs the facts.”

“The bottom line is they have the worst offensive line in football. They can’t run block or pass block. And the receivers … I was irate watching Johnny Knox get pushed around like a little girl by DeAngelo Hall. He should be embarrassed to watch Hall out-fight him.

“The red zone, that’s Jay. And throwing off his back foot, Jay. But from his perspective, he has to be frustrated because he’s saying, ‘I have a coordinator whose system calls for me to throw the ball to these spots and I have these knucklehead receivers who freelance.’

“To me Cutler is the least of the Bears’ worries. He’s not even close to being a worry.”

Speak Up: Jay Cutler Met The Media At Halas Hall Today

Bears QB Jay Cutler met the media at Halas Hall today. Here’s what he had to say:

On improving
We have to figure things out. Whether it’s us as players not paying attention and doing exactly what we’re supposed to do, or if it’s something they’re doing differently. We have to figure it out. Everyone has to get better.

We’re 4-2, and we have one more game before the bye. We’re still in a good position in the [NFC North] and the NFC, so I don’t think there’s a need to hit the panic button, by any means. But we have to get better, there’s no doubt about it.

We have to complete some balls, have to hit some hots, I have to get a little more accurate and we have to protect better. Everyone, it takes 11 guys. This offense is so detailed if one guy is off it’s going to have a traumatic effect on the outcome of the play.

We have to get more consistent.

Is there an ability to audible in this system?
No, not in this offense. Didn’t really have the ability to do that in Denver either. There are answers out there.

Every play, there are a 1,000 different scenarios that could go down, 1,000 different variables. Receivers are cutting routes, they’re doing different stuff on the line and I’m doing different things. We’ve got backs checking different guys, coast to coast. It’s very complex, everything is built into it. It’s just a matter of us doing it correctly.

What was it like going to Denver to play for Mike Shanahan
Anytime you can go to an organization like that with a coach and offensive leader like Mike Shanahan with the way he’s been successful in the past in developing quarterbacks, it was a lot of fun. It was a lot of fun my first year there, and then the next two.

On the Redskins
They’re a talented team, really talented team, good secondary. They’re going to come after us. In the past couple of games, if they go back and watch, they’ll see where we had difficulties. We should expect blitz, and they have a secondary back there to cover some people up.

On the challenge for the offensive line
If we’re going to get blitzed as much as we get blitzed, it’s going to be hard for them to pick up guys on the move and find gaps. It’s difficult. It’s really difficult for an offensive line. Those guys on the right side are still learning, and Olin [Kreutz] is doing his best to get them in the right position.

On the NFL cracking down on excessive hits
It’s hard to tell defensive guys going as fast as they are, that they have to aim for a certain spot, that’s going to be tough duty.

On ensuring he doesn’t get hit as much
Everyone takes part in that. It starts up front, and it’s my job to get rid of the ball on time, it’s the receivers job to get open and convert their routes when they’re supposed to convert them. Everyone takes part in the passing game and our ability to execute them.

Do you believe the quarterback gets more hits in this system?
I don’t. I do not.

On his relationship with Shanahan
Close. He was hands on with me when I first got there. He was in our meetings room, checking in. He did his utmost to make sure I was going in the right direction and they weren’t trying to overwhelm me.

On Greg Olsen’s lack of involvement
It’s game by game. If they’re going to take away guys, other guys have to step up. So we’re doing everything possible to get Greg involved, and some he’ll be more involved than others.

On being optimistic about improving
As players and a staff and as a whole organization, we’ve identified the problem and we’re going to attack it and fix it. If we were in a different situation, if our record was reversed, we’d probably a little more adamant about it than we are now. We’re still in a good spot, still have a good team and we have to fix the problems and move on.

Speak Up: Matt Forte On Getting Back To His Old Form

Matt Forte had a great rookie season where he became the first rookie in NFL history to rush for at least 1,000 yards and catch more than 62 passes. But his numbers fell off last season and it probably was caused by his injuries.

Here’s what Forte had to say about how his feeling this off-season on ChicagoBears.com:

“I feel a lot faster,” Forte said. “I’m not injured during OTAs like last year. At the end of the season last year, I had knee surgery. I got that healed up and I actually went down to Florida and did some training so I could re-do the speed training and stuff that I did before that I didn’t get to do because of my injuries.”

“It’s a team,” he said. “It’s not me versus Chester. He’s in here to help out the team and I’m here to help out the team, too, to get a championship, so that’s what it is.”

“A lot of teams have two-running back systems and actually it prolongs their careers, so I don’t mind having him here to take some reps and get in there as long as we win games and it’s working,” Forte said.

“This is the National Football League. People are going to be brought in and out every day. Competition is part of the game. If you’re afraid of competition you shouldn’t be playing anyway, so I come out here and compete every day.”

“You don’t even have to look at the numbers, just the name of Marshall Faulk,” Forte said. “We watch a lot of old film on them. When they had Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce and all those guys, it just makes you get excited about how good this offense can be and some of the talented guys we’ve got on this team that can fit those positions.”

Speak Up: Brian Urlacher Likes Off-Season Moves

Brian Urlacher is excited for this season and he likes the moves the Bears have made this off-season, here’s what he had to say on ChicagoBears.com today.

Urlacher on Julius Peppers:

“For a player of his caliber, you just know what you’re going to get,” Urlacher said. “We all know his athletic ability is unmatched in this league. But he works his butt off every day. He’s in the weight room working, he’s on the field. He doesn’t say too much, but he works his tail off every day.”

“Just watching him, he’s so smooth and fluid and he gets to the quarterback in a hurry,” Urlacher said.

“I think most importantly it will help our secondary, and if you help them you help our whole defense,” Urlacher said. “The ball’s coming out. [Opposing quarterbacks] can’t hold onto the ball this year.

“It’s going to help our DBs out because they don’t have to play coverage very long. As linebackers, we can break. When the quarterback looks [to a receiver], we know to go because if he pumps it he’ll get sacked.”

Urlacher on Chris Harris:

“It’s good to have him back,” Urlacher said. “That was huge for us this offseason, to get a guy who we’re comfortable with. I think that’s the No. 1 thing with a guy back there is just being comfortable with him.

“He helps us all. He gets us all in position. What I like about it is if I screw up, he’ll tell me I screwed up. Sometimes you don’t have guys who do that. I like it when a guy will do that. Lance [Briggs] will tell me when I screw up, the guys up front will. But it’s nice to have a guy in the back end who will do that.”

“They don’t want to step on anyone’s toes,” Urlacher said. “They’re probably not sure if you were wrong or not. But Chris knows where we’re supposed to be. He knows what’s going on out there and it’s nice to have him back there. He makes a lot of plays. He’s rangy and he’s always in the right spots.”

Urlacher on Major Wright:

“I like Major Wright,” Urlacher said. “I watched him practice three years ago in spring practice. They wouldn’t let him do much in practice because coach [Urban] Meyer said he hits too hard.

“I’m impressed with him. His footwork is good. He’s smooth. He comes out of his breaks really good. He takes great angles on the football and he goes for the football. There are going to be times to hit people, but he goes for the football, which I like. I’m excited about him.”

Speak Up: Desmond Clark Working His Way Up The Depth Chart

Desmond Clark, a veteran tight end whose spent the last six seasons in Chicago turned 33 yesterday. He is entering his last season under contract.

Clark is fighting for a spot on this team and here’s what he had to say about that:

“I am going in with the mindset that I am trying to start this year and that is how I am going to approach it, but I am quite sure there is going to be  a role for every tight end that is on this team.”

“You know what? The thing that I like about Mike Martz, he has shown in the past that it doesn’t matter – draft status, money or years in the league, all of that political stuff doesn’t matter. He is going to take the best guy and he is going to put him on the field and put guys in position to win. So, saying that I think when we go into training camp, we all are going to have to battle it out.

“Me, Greg, Kellen and plus Brandon, we all are going to battle it out for that position. Right now, I can’t tell you. Right now, we’re just running around in shorts and not even helmets. It will kind of start to sift itself out a little bit once we get into training camp. But me, I’m thinking that I am going to be right in the mix with everyone else.”

“I just have a belief in Martz that he’s creative enough to use four tight ends and who knows? It might only be three of us when it’s all said and done, heck, it might only be two of us. We don’t know that right now, but we’d like to think it will be four of us here because we know four of us, actually five of us with significant playing time in the NFL when you count Richard Angulo, so we have five tight ends that can get the job done.”
