Speak Up: Tommie Harris Says Bears Have To Run The Table

harrisTommie Harris, who by the way recorded his first sack of the season last Thursday night against the 49ers spoke up after practice about the Bears current situation:

‘When I say the wall is on our back, that’s what that means, we have to win out. We have no room to get any more losses. If you lose again, you’re going to be hoping that another team loses for you to get in. You don’t want to be in that position. We were in that position last year. It’s basically in our hands right now.”

Thoughts:

Tommie Harris is a very passionate guy when it comes to football and if the Bears defense can forget the dreadful performances against Cincinnati and Arizona they can make this team that much better. I know the offense is having their struggles, but I believe this team has a shot at the playoffs, even with the inexperienced wide receivers and offensive linemen this team has. 11-5 or 10-6 is where the Bears want to be at the end of this season, they have a tough schedule, hopefully they can do it.

Vernon Davis Believes He Can Destroy The Bears Struggling Defense

20080921_zaf_c04_578.jpg49ers tight end Vernon Davis thinks the 49ers offense can crush the Bears struggling defense. Davis has 20 catches and four touchdowns, since the 49ers replaced Shaun Hill and inserted Alex Smith as their quarterback.

Here’s what Davis had to say:

“I think we can destroy their front, the guys up front, I think we can destroy them. I don’t see anything spectacular about their front line. Their linebackers, I think we can handle them pretty well. I like (Adewale) Ogunleye. I like the way he’s playing up front. He’s about the only player I like on their defensive line. I think he’s doing a good job.”

Davis also took a shot at the Bears best linebacker Lance Briggs, here’s what he said:

“He can’t check me, I think Lance is a good player. I totally respect Lance Briggs. He’s a good player. He’s been around before I came in this league and I respect his game. But we still have an opportunity. If he’s matched up against me one-on-one, I’m going to try my best to beat him.”

This should be great motivation for the Bears defense to get back to stopping offenses instead of allowing them offenses to destroy them. The Bears rank 24th in the NFL in red zone offense (13 touchdowns on 28 trips) and 31st in red zone defense (20 TDs on 27 drives).  For those of you who thought the Bears offense was worse in the red zone you were wrong. The defense has to step up and get some kind of pressure on Alex Smith and the whole unit has to stop missing easy open field tackles.

The 49ers have lost four in a row after starting the season 3-1 and the Bears have dropped three of four after starting the season 3-1 as well.

Speak Up: Jay Cutler On The Bears Young Receivers

Browns Bears FootballJay Cutler spoke about his young group of receivers yesterday and this is what he had to say:

“You look across the league and sometimes you’ve got one of those guys or you don’t have one of those guys, we don’t have Larry Fitzgerald on this team. We’ve got Devin [Hester] and Earl [Bennett] and some other guys. We’re going to make it work with them.”

“I think we’re fine in that area, we’ve got three or four very reliable if not above average guys that can go out there and play and make things happen. They’re a young group. That’s maybe their only fault. But they’re not playing like they’re young. They’re doing good things out there. They’re making plays for us, and making catches.

“I’m happy with their progress and where they are right now.”

Tillman: “Red Bull Was Our Secret”

91063055Bears veteran corner back Charles Tillman spoke up about yesterdays game, here’s what he had to say:

“It wasn’t really how they came out, we came out real flat on those guys, and that’s unacceptable. … That’s not our style of play. We don’t play ball like that.”

Tillman pointed to the Bears’ “secret weapon” in the locker room during the halftime speech given by Head Coach Lovie Smith, here’s what he said:

“We all came in and drank Red Bull and we were jumping off the walls like a bunch of crazy men, and it worked, so for Atlanta (on Oct. 18), I’m buying Red Bull for everybody so we can play like that the first quarter.”

Did You Know? 10-5-09

91421700Bears quarterback Jay Cutler became the first Bears quarterback since Jack Concannon in 1970 to have a 100-plus passer rating in three straight games.

Oddly enough in 1967 the Bears traded Mike Ditka to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Concannon. Concannon spent five seasons with the Bears (1967-1971), where he threw for over 5,000 yards, 31 touchdowns and 52 interceptions. His passer rating in those five years was 55.6.

Concannon’s best season with the Bears was in 1970, when he threw for 2130 yards, 16 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

Hopefully Jay Cutler doesn’t put up stats like that, but it’s sure nice to see him breaking records already. If you didn’t know Cutler has thrown seven touchdowns and one interception since the four pick embarrassment in Green Bay.

DE Alex Brown Should Be Ready To Go Against Seattle

brown

According to Jeff Dickerson of ESPNChicago.com, Bears defensive end Alex Brown was in the Halas Hall training room Monday receiving treatment on his sprained left ankle.

Lovie Smith had this to say about Brown:

“Luckily, in Alex’s case, it doesn’t seem to be the case [that the injury is serious], he should be good to go.”

“He means a lot to our football team, we need him on the field.”

DE Alex Brown has only missed one game in his career. That came in 2002 versus Minnesota. I don’t think Brown will miss anytime with this injury, but if he does expect Mark Anderson to take his spot. Hopefully Brown will play because he had a huge week against Pittsburgh.

Other News:

Ex-Bears DT Alfonso Boone signed with the San Diego Chargers, where he reunites with former Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera. Boone is 33 years old and was signed because the Chargers lost DT Jamal Williams to injury. Good luck Alfonso, you were always a solid contributor in Chicago.

The Bears Have Found Their Weapons For Jay Cutler

Steelers Bears FootballWe all knew that Jay Cutler was a good quarterback, but we didn’t know he actually had weapons to help him on offense.

I mean who was Johnny Knox, Kellen Davis and Earl Bennett before this season?

Not only did those young guys play well, but Devin Hester was drawing lots of double teams and made many nice catches. Greg Olsen played huge as well after getting leveled by Steelers safety Tyrone Carter. Veteran running back Adrian Peterson was put in the game late in the second quarter and I liked how Bears coaches used him. They called some screens for him and some nice running calls too.

Now lets get to the young guys.

Kellen Davis didn’t catch a pass last season because he didn’t get lots of opportunities with Dez Clark and Greg Olsen in front of him, but he showed up big yesterday. Having a target, who is 6’7″ really helps a lot and he made some huge plays for the Bears yesterday, including a touchdown in the second quarter.

Now to Earl Bennett, the guy showed up big in week one against Green Bay, but didn’t do much yesterday. However he got some great blocks on a big third down play and found a way to convert it.

The biggest surprise of this group is fifth round pick from the small school called Abilene Christian, Johnny Knox. First of all the Bears got that fifth round pick in the trade for Jay Cutler, so that is pretty cool. Knox showed how fast he really is against Pittsburgh yesterday. He had six catches for 70 yards and was zipping up and down the field. He had the game tying touchdown catch and had a 50 yard kick return (that was called back because of a hold). Knox is the real deal and I think if your a Bears fan you had to be excited about this kid during the preseason, now you know he is for real.

With the speed of Devin Hester, Johnny Knox and Earl Bennett and the size of Greg Olsen and Kellen Davis this team could be unstoppable if it’s in sync like yesterdays game. Don’t forget Matt Forte, Adrian Peterson and Garrett Wolfe as weapons not only on the ground, but also through the air. These are the players I have been raving about all summer and now their showing everybody their for real.

Next week the Bears visit the Seattle Seahawks, who could be without QB Matt Hasselback.

Speak Up: Hunter Hillenmeyer Looks Ahead To Next Week

Bears Hillenmeyer FootballBrian Urlacher’s replacement Hunter Hillenmeyer really played well filling in at the middle linebacker against the Steelers.

Here’s what he had to say about the game and next week’s game against the Seahawks:

“In the same way when we lost to Green Bay, we were quick to emphasize that it’s just one loss, we’re excited about winning yesterday, but it’s also just one win.

“It’s great, but if they make those field goals, it ends up differently. We don’t want to put too much stock in that all of sudden we’re this great team that can’t be beaten. We were fortunate to come away with a win. Hopefully it gets a little momentum going, but you don’t want to read too much into it either way.”

“He’s [Wallace] a great athlete, that’s about all I know so far, I’ve seen him play some football, and he’s a guy that can make plays.”

Speak Up: Dez Clark Talks About His Back Injury

83725930Bears tight end Desmond Clark talked about his back injury from the Packers game. Here’s what he had to say on his blog:

“I sustained a back injury. I don’t know how long I will be out. Right now lets just call it day to day. Hope I wake up in the morning feeling better so I can give it a shot to get back on the field ASAP.
All of our goals, besides going 16-0, are still in front of us. Miami Baby!!!!!!!!!”

I hope Dez is a quick healer because we need him more than people think. Get healthy quick Dez.
