Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler had his team sitting pretty with a 7-3 record 10 games into the 2011 season.

Then a broken thumb against the San Diego Chargers in Week 11 ended Cutler’s season. He had the Bears on a five-game winning streak.

The No. 6 scoring offense was succeeding under the simplification of Mike Martz’s offense. A lot of the credit for the success has to go Mike Tice, who was the offensive line coach last season.

Martz wasn’t brought back this offseason. Tice was promoted to offensive coordinator and formerBroncos quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates was added as the quarterbacks coach.

Cutler’s familiarity with Bates and offseason acquisition WR Brandon Marshall certainly helps. It’s not an instant solution just yet.

The offensive line still has some issues, Matt Forte‘s absence could loom far into training camp and Mike Tice is taking over the offensive reigns for the first time in his career.

With all that being said, the Bears have certainly improved their offense drastically since last season ended.

QB Jason Campbell was brought in to back up Cutler, RB Michael Bush was signed to provide a solid goal-line option.

WRs Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery and Devin Thomas offer plenty of height to a corps that was among the shortest in the league a year ago.

TE/halfback Evan Rodriguez was drafted in the fourth round of this year’s draft. He could provide an intriguing option for Cutler and Tice.

Cutler was sacked 23 times during his 10 starts, but only in Week 1 (five sacks) and Week 2 (six sacks) did the offensive line really struggle to protect him.

Tice will still have plenty of say with the offensive line. The Bears believe they have plenty of depth on the offensive line—it’s just a matter of putting the pieces in the right place.

QB coach Jeremy Bates has a lot of familiarity with Cutler. He knows his strengths and weaknesses very well. Cutler, Marshall and Bates being on the same team once again will only help the Bears’ chances.

The Cutler-Marshall duo was almost unstoppable at times in Denver, and with the potential one-two punch looming with Matt Forte and Michael Bush, this team could shine. Jeffery, Bennett, Hester and Thomas will see lots of time on offense behind Marshall. Kellen Davis and Evan Rodriguez are more offensive weapons Cutler will have in his arsenal.

Cutler has to be excited with the talent around him for the upcoming season. It all comes down to putting it all together. It won’t come together overnight, but with familiarity with many players and coaches, it could come quickly.

The Bears defense has played at a high level for a while now. With the addition of Shea McClellin to the defensive line, it could propel them to the elite.

This team certainly has what it takes to make it to the Super Bowl in New Orleans this upcoming season. The offense will be the spotlight, considering all the moves that have been made this offseason.

Lovie Smith and Rod Marinelli continue to do a solid job with the defense. It’s up to Tice and Bates to put Cutler in the best situations week in and week out on offense

Cutler doesn’t seem to be worried with the absence of Matt Forte. He thinks he will be back sooner than later, and I completely agree.

On paper, the Bears are a top-10 team in the NFL and a top-three team in the NFC. They have enough firepower to compete with NFC North rivals Green Bay and Detroit.

Chicago Bears fans should be excited with these improvements. Many of them are constantly down on the team until the season starts, and then they change their tune.

With all the bad luck that has struck Chicago sports this past season, Chicago fans are certainly upset. But they should be looking forward to what could be a historic 2012 Bears run.

It’s a make-or-break year for the Chicago Bears this upcoming season. GM Phil Emery has made the right moves to better the club. Now it’s time to make it all work.

Can Cutler lead the 2012 Chicago Bears to the Super Bowl under Mike Tice’s lead this upcoming season? Thoughts?

Tight end Evan Rodriguez was selected by the Chicago Bears in the fourth-round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

The 6’2″ Rodriguez played fullback, H-back and tight end during his time at Temple University.

He reeled in 69 passes for 871 yards and seven receiving touchdowns in 37 games at Temple.

He has a real chance of earning playing time this season. Tight end Kellen Davis was re-signed and will be looked upon as a target. Veteran Matt Spaeth will be used mostly as a blocker.

With all that being said, Bears general manager Phil Emery likes his versatility and said he could be used all over the offense.

Don’t be shocked if he takes a roster spot from steady fullback Tyler Clutts because his potential is so great.

I had the chance to catch up with Evan this week and he talked about a fact most people don’t know about him, his excitement to get on the field with his new teammates and much more.

Here’s the interview with Bears rookie tight end Evan Rodriguez.

BB: Was it always your dream to play in the NFL? Are you excited to be in the city of Chicago playing for such a historic franchise?

ER: Yes, I am definitely excited to be in the NFL. My heroes have always been Sean Taylor, Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice.

BB: What do you feel is your biggest strength?

ER:My versatility, no doubt. I’m a mismatch for defenses and you can basically line me up anywhere on the field.

BB: What do you feel is your biggest weakness?

ER:(laughing) I’ll let you guys figure that out.

BB: What was your favorite moment at Temple either on the field or off?

ER: Coming out of the tunnel on game-day and scoring my first college TD.

BB: Which NFL player do you most compare yourself to on the field?

ER: Aaron Hernandez, because I am versatile and I can do some things he can do. He gave me a better chance of playing the TE position and has helped others take me more seriously now. He has worked hard to make that happen. I have a long way to go myself.

BB: Who is the person that you credit to getting you to this point?

ER: My family, all my coaches, especially my high school football coach Vinny Ascolese. But I could never not mention Coaches like Kevin Bianco & Ralph Marino (HS hoops), Al Golden(Temple), Matt Ruhle (Temple), and Steve Addazio (Temple).

BB: In terms of off the field and personality, what will an NFL franchise be getting with Evan Rodriguez?

ER: I feel I’m a good guy and humble. I get along with people and at the end of the day, when I am on the field it is all business. I am very coachable and I like to be coached hard. I will always be a big part of the community and family is always very important to me.

BB: What does your pregame warmup consist of?

ER: Mostly listening to music, staying to myself, visualizing the game because at that point all my personal prep work is done.

BB: What artists/songs are typically part of your warmup playlist?

ER: Oh definitely my entertainment group New League Nation. TI, Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne. For songs New League Nation’s You Can Follow Me There and Nation Under God, Lil Wayne’s We Be Steady Mobbin, TI’s Ready for Whatever.

BB: What is a fact that some people may not know about you?

ER: For seven summers when I was 9-15, I attended two sleep-away camps in Maine, Camp Cedar Camp Wildwood Everyone was pretty much Jewish, but me.

BB: Do you have a nickname that your teammates and friends call you? How did that come about?

ER: Sure, ERod. I was born in the Bronx and grew up across from NYC in North Bergen, NJ. A lot of kids liked A-Rod, so it was a natural thing I guess.

BB: Are you a big social media guy?

ER: Yes I am, but far less than I use to be. Now I just let my manager handle all that so I can concentrate on working out and learning the playbook. I do read the personal messages though and try to respond when I can. Mostly my manager uses Facebook and Twitter as just a news feed really, but I still post pictures on Instagram.

BB: What is your favorite part of football?

ER: Definitely the competition, and winning of course!

BB: Are you glad to be done with the draft process and be part of a team?

ER: Yes, 1000%. It was a huge relief to get a call from & telling me I was chosen, it was like a huge relief off my shoulders. The process of playing the games, doing school work, interviewing agents and financial advisors, doing the combine training and playing in the East-West All-Star game, and all the people chatting me up, it was overwhelming.

BB: Have any of the Bears players contacted you since you came to terms with the team?

ER: No, not yet, but I will meet the guys shortly at mini-camp.

Former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner played for the St. Louis Rams, New York Giants and most recently, the Arizona Cardinals during his time in the league.

Prior to his NFL career, Warner was playing with the Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena Football League.

Before the 1997 AFL season, Warner requested and earned a tryout with the Chicago Bears, but an injury to his throwing elbow caused by a spider bite sustained during his honeymoon prevented him from attending.

Just imagine if the Bears were able to be the home to Kurt Warner instead of the St. Louis Rams. Would he have been as good in Chicago? Or was the ‘Greatest Show on Turf’ the perfect first home for him.

Thoughts?

Golden joins former West Texas A&M offensive tackle J’Marcus Webb, who was drafted in 2010 by the Bears.

Golden put up some impressive during his four years with the Buffaloes. He reeled in 55 passes for 1,076 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior year last season.

He finished second all time in West Texas A&M receiving yards (3,007) and fifth in receptions (165).

He would have to earn his way onto the team through special teams most likely.

I had the chance to catch up with Brittan this past week and he talked about his favorite part of football, what his pregame warmup consist of and if his dream was always to play in the NFL.

Here’s the interview with Bears rookie wide receiver Brittan Golden.

BB: Was it always your dream to play in the NFL? Are you excited to be in the city of Chicago playing for such a historic franchises?

BG: Yes. When I was young on Sundays after church I would grab my football and watch a few games and then go outside and pretend I was on that team. I am very excited to be apart of Chicago. I am honored to be apart of such a historic franchise.

BB: What do you feel is your biggest strength?

BG: Probably my speed and ability to work with the ball in my hands.

BB: What do you feel is your biggest weakness?

BG: probably size.

BB: Which NFL player do you most compare yourself to on the field?

BG: I wouldn’t say compare, but i like watching players like Victor Cruz and Johnny Knox and try to model my game like theirs.

BB: Who is the person that you credit to getting you to this point?

BG: God first. Without him none of this would be possible.

BB: In terms of off the field and personality, what will an NFL franchise be getting with Brittan Golden?

BG: I’m a laid back kinda guy. I like to spend time with friends, family, and my daughter.

BB: What does your pregame warmup consist of?

BG: Pre-game I like to listen to music, dance around a bit and I always eat Skittles.

BB: What artists/songs are typically part of your warmup playlist?

BG: Lil Wayne, Drake, J. Cole, Wale, Jeezy, and Rick Ross

BB: What is a fact that some people may not know about you?

BG: I was not recruited for football out of high school. I walked on to play at West Texas A&M.

BB: Do you have a nickname that your teammates and friends call you? How did that come about?

BG: Everyone just calls me “B” usually. Some call me “Golden Child.”

BB: Are you a big social media guy?

BG: Not too big I have both a Twitter (@BrittanGolden) and a Facebook.

BB: What is your favorite part of football?

BG: I love winning, but I would have to say just being apart of a team. Knowing every time you step on the field your teammates have your back.

BB: Are you friends with current Bears LT J’Marcus Webb, who was at West Texas A&M as well?

BG: Yes we hung out every now and then while he was playing at WT.

BB: Have any of the Bears players contacted you since you came to terms with the team?

BG: J’Marcus sent me a text message congratulating and welcoming me to the team.

Defensive tackle Ronnie Cameron from Old Dominion University went undrafted, but signed a contract with the Chicago Bears on Sunday.

Cameron has arguably been the most impressive player since the Old Dominion program was restarted in 2009. He earned the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year this past season as well as CAA Football Student-Athlete of the Year and All-American honors from seven different sources.

He was second on the defense in 2011 with 73 tackles. He had a team leading 17 tackles-for-loss and 6.5 sacks.

Considering the Bears didn’t select a defensive tackle throughout the draft and watched Amobi Okoye and Anthony Adams leave the team this off-season, Cameron has a legit shot to earn a roster spot.

I had the chance to catch up with Ronnie and he talked about the person he credits to getting him to this point, which NFL player he compares himself too and much more.

Here’s the interview with Bears rookie defensive tackle Ronnie Cameron.

BB: Was it always your dream to play in the NFL? Are you excited to be in the city of Chicago playing for such a historic franchise?

RC: Since I was young, it was always a dream to play in the NFL and in the last couple years it became a concrete goal because of my performance on the field. I’m elated to be a part of the Chicago Bears franchise, it’s a first class organization with a history of winning and hopefully I’ll be able to add to that.

BB: What do you feel is your biggest strength?

RC: My biggest strength is my quickness and first step. This allows me to penetrate into gaps with great success. That’s why I thought me being able to be apart of the Bears was a perfect fit.

BB: What do you feel is your biggest weakness?

RC: Biggest weakness which I’ve been working on is pad level, playing in college you can get away with playing high but in the NFL it’s a different story and now playing with proper technique is paramount.

BB: Which NFL player do you most compare yourself to on the field?

RC: Growing up I watched a ton of John Randle and Warren Sapp and I think I’ve been able to mimic my game after that. In today’s age I feel like I try to follow a guy such as Cullen Jenkins.

BB: Who is the person that you credit to getting you to this point?

RC: I credit my parents to getting me to this point. They came into this country with nothing and built a lot of success and I’ve always thought I should follow suit and make the most out of every opportunity that comes my way.

BB: In terms of off the field and personality, what will an NFL franchise be getting with Ronnie Cameron?

RC: Even off the field I feel like I’m a driven person who wants to genuinely help people. I find a lot of joy in talking to and mentoring young kids to help them see that there is so much to life if they take the right steps. For the most part I’m a low-key person that enjoys books and movies.

BB: What does your pregame warmup consist of?

RC: Pregame warmup for me isn’t scripted or defined, I listen to random music and just try to stay loose, I don’t really get charged up before games. I just relax and envision success during the game.

BB: What artists/songs are typically part of your warmup playlist?

RC: It varies. I’m a big Kanye West, Fabolous and Andre 3000 fan, but I can also switch it up and slow it down and listen to John Legend or Bob Marley before a game. So its really whatever pops up I listen to.

BB: What is a fact that some people may not know about you?

RC: Grew up a computer nerd more than a jock, I built my first computer when I was 9.

BB: Do you have a nickname that your teammates and friends call you? How did that come about?

RC: Since Freshman year in college I was called ‘Ron the Don.’ A senior from Hofstra gave me that name because I always acted a lot older then the rest and it just happened to stick.

BB: Are you a big social media guy?

RC: I spend an okay amount of time on social media. I have a Twitter and an Instagram, both are @RonDon96. And I keep up with my family on Facebook.

BB: What is your favorite part of football?

RC: Sheer joy on Saturdays, now Sundays in just running around and hitting people, especially QBs. Being able to run around and impose your will on other people and still smile about it. It’s a great feeling.

BB: Are you glad to be done with the whole draft process and be part of a team?

RC: Absolutely relieved, the process started in December and it couldn’t have been over fast enough and I’m glad I ended up where God wanted me to be wearing blue and orange.

BB: Have any of the Bears players contacted you since you came to terms with the team?

RC: Not as of yet, only a couple other rookie free agents who I’ve known for a while who are now apart of the Bears organization.

Don’t forget to follow Ronnie Cameron on Twitter, @RonDon96.

The Bears landed a real talent with the selection of wide receiver Alshon Jeffery in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

GM Phil Emery had Jeffery ranked as his third receiver behind Justin Blackmon and Michael Floyd.

Sporting News writer Vinnie Iyer believes Jeffery can make an immediate impact. Here’s what he had to say via (Sportingnews.com).

“The five wide receivers drafted ahead of him—Justin Blackmon (Jacksonville), Michael Floyd (Arizona), Kendall Wright (Tennessee), A.J. Jenkins (San Francisco), Stephen Hill (New York Jets)—all step into quarterback situations that may hamper them. With the Bears, Jeffery will catch passes from a surefire gunslinger in Jay Cutler.

Jeffery’s production at South Carolina last year took a hit partly because of some QB turnover. Chicago just got a dominant No. 1 in Brandon Marshall, and have some speedy, quick options in Johnny Knox and Devin Hester. Concerns about Jeffery’s speed and burst won’t be an issue working against No. 2 and No. 3 corners in the red zone.”

Thoughts?

The Bears added six players over the past three days through the NFL Draft. On Sunday they added 11 undrafted free agents.

They had 72 players on their roster before Sunday, adding those 11 players puts them at 83 at the moment. They’re allowed to have 90 players at this time.

The 11 undrafted free agents who inked deals with the Bears were: Wyoming running back Alvester Alexander, Troy offensive tackle James Brown, Old Dominion defensive tackle Ronnie Cameron, Louisiana Tech linebacker Adrien Cole, Maine safety Trevor Coston, Western Illinois receiver Terriun Crump, West Texas A&M receiver Brittan Golden, Auburn tackle A.J. Greene, Wayne State safety Jeremy Jones, Liberty receiver Chris Summers and Southern Miss linebacker Ronnie Thornton.

OT James Brown- The 6’3″, 306 lb Brown was ranked as the second best undrafted free agent available by NFL.com’s Gil Brandt. ESPN’s Mel Kiper had him ranked as the No. 54 player in the draft. Scouts he lacks the quickness to handle pass rushers on the outside and could be suited to move inside at one of the guard positions. He is a player with lots of potential, who could turn out to be a nice pickup.

DT Ronnie Cameron-He spent his final two seasons at Old Dominion after transferring from Hofstra. He racked up 73 tackles, 17 tackles-for-loss and 6.5 sacks in his senior season. He had 72 tackles and 5.5 sacks in his junior season. At 6’2″, 305 lbs Cameron certainly has the frame to work his way onto the team. He could help lighten the losses of Amobi Okoye and Anthony Adams this off-season.

RB Alvester Alexander-The tailback ran for 2,127 yards and 27 touchdowns in three years at Wyoming. He could be a likely candidate for the practice squad considering the depth the Bears have at running back currently.

LB Adrien Cole-He is a three-year starter at Lousiana Tech, who racked up 128 tackles, one interception, two sacks, one forced fumble and three blocked kicks in his final season. He will battle his way onto the team through special teams play.

S Trevor Coston-He averaged 9.7 yards per punt return last season, while reeling in six interceptions playing safety. He might have a tough time making the team considering the players the Bears already have in place at safety.

S Jeremy Jones-He was a four-year starter at Wayne State. He made 106 tackles, nine interceptions and 6.5 sacks in his final season. He flashed a lot of potential in college, but could be better suited for the practice squad.

WR Terriun Crump-He is a native of Chicago, spending three seasons at Western Illinois. He reeled in 135 receptions for 2,067 yards and 11 touchdowns during that time. He is likely just a camp body, the Bears already have six receivers under contract with NFL experience.

WR Brittan Golden-He spent his college year at West Texas A&M, the same school Bears left tackle J’Marcus Webb played at. Golden reeled in 55 passes for 1,076 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior. Just like Crump he could have a very tough time making his way onto the roster. The practice squad could be where he ends up.

WR Chris Summers-He posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons at Liberty. In those two seasons combined he caught 140 passes for 2,095 yards and 22 touchdowns. He put up impressive numbers, but they are certainly skewed coming from a small school like Liberty.

OT A.J. Greene-He is an offensive tackle from Auburn, who performed very well as a senior after missing his junior campaign with an ankle injury. He will battle with James Brown for that swing tackle position.

LB Ronnie Thornton-He racked up 290 tackles, 4.0 sacks, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and two interceptions in his four seasons at Southern Miss. He will battle Adrien Cole for a spot on the roster or the practice squad.

They added some potential contributors in the third and fourth rounds.

Then finished off the final rounds with two cornerbacks, who can help lighten the losses of Corey Graham and Zackary Bowman.

Overall, the 2012 NFL Draft was pretty good for general manager Phil Emery and the Bears.

Here’s how the Chicago Bears picks graded out.

First Round (N0. 19)-DE, Shea McClellin, Boise State

McClellin is a fast defensive end, who is very versatile. He ran the second fastest 40-yard dash (4.63) at the NFL Combine. He has the chance to start this season opposite Julius Peppers. There has been rumblings already that he could be the future replacement for Brian Urlacher, when he decides to hang the cleats up for good. Many are saying McClellin would have been available in the second-round, but Minnesota and Green Bay were very high on him and would have likely scooped him up at the end of the first round. McClellin will wear the No. 99 uniform for the Bears.

Grade: A-

Second Round (No. 45)-WR, Alshon Jeffery, South Carolina

Jeffery is a 6’3″ wide receiver, who put up impressive numbers in his time at South Carolina. He might want to bulk up a bit to bully the stronger corners. He has the ability to catch any pass that comes his way and could be used in goal-line situations with WR Brandon Marshall and TE Kellen Davis. The Bears went from having the shortest wide receiving core in the entire league to one of the tallest ones very fast. This was a great value pick here for the Bears, who swapped second round picks with St. Louis and traded their fifth round pick. Jeffery will wear the No. 17 uniform for the Bears.

Third Round (No. 79)-S, Brandon Hardin, Oregon State

Hardin is a big-bodied defensive back, who spent his collegiate career playing cornerback. He will play strong safety in the Bears cover-2 shell. He missed his senior season with a broken shoulder, but he showed his abilities throughout his collegiate career. He ran an impressive 4.43 40-yard dash at his pro day. He provides a lot of potential to the young secondary and should immediately contribute on special teams. He is very similar to current Bears safety Chris Conte, considering he had no experience playing safety coming into the league either. At the worst Hardin will be a reserve for the next couple of seasons. Hardin will wear the No. 35 uniform for the Bears.

Fourth Round (No. 111)-TE, Evan Rodriguez, Temple

Rodriguez is a kid who has a lot of ability as a tight end or an H-back. He ran into some trouble earlier in his college years with misdemeanor and disorderly conduct. But he says he has matured. He projects as the third tight end in the depth chart and can be used as an H-back similar to the way the Bears used Greg Olsen in his last season in Chicago. He is more of a pass catcher than a blocker. Rodriguez has the potential to be the next Aaron Hernandez if he works hard at getting to that level. The Bears might have reached to draft him in the fourth round, but GM Phil Emery was really high on him.

Grade: C

Sixth Round (No. 184)-CB, Isaiah Frey, Nevada

Frey is a cornerback, who isn’t physical enough, but worked his way up draft charts due to his impressive 18 reps in the bench press on his pro day. He is 5’11″, but could be a long shot to make the team considering the depth at cornerback right now for the Bears. He got picked ahead of some better cornerbacks. GM Phil Emery must have viewed him as a developmental kind of player, with lots of potential. We’ll see how this corner pans out.

Grade: C-

Seventh Round (No. 220)-CB, Greg McCoy, TCU

McCoy is a cornerback and kick returner. He returned three kickoffs for touchdowns. He averaged 28.9 yards per return and reeled in seven interceptions in his four seasons at Texas Christian. He might have a better chance to make the team than Frey due to his kick return abilities. He is undersized, but so is D.J. Moore and Tim Jennings, he could turn out to be a steal if he is coached up by Lovie Smith and Co.
